This depends on
1. Your Sony Camera. I could not find a Sony MSDV. Does it record to tape, harddrive, or DVD?
2. How are you able to capture / transfer your video clips to your computer? Does your camera have a iLink (Firewire) port, and does your computer?
Capturing DV, Type-1 via Firewire is recommended the most, and then of course editing the same format. Since your end goal is to produce a DVD of your video, then you would create a DVD compatible MPEG-2 video file from your project, which would be used to author your DVD.

Hi Ken,
"MSDV" is shown in VS along with the source device (in this case Sony) when capturing from an ordinary DV tape cam it is not a make or model of cam.
"MSDV" is the Microsoft Windows Driver Model (WDM) driver for DV camcorders. The driver appears as a DirectShow filter when the device is plugged in.
kayleighink,
your cam is a mini DV cam and it is generally recommended you capture to DV AVI from the cam to your computer and do your editing in that format. Follow link Ken provided and you should be fine.
