codecs

Post by RJYTED »

Hi All - this is my first posting so please bear with me. I recently purchased VS10+ and am finding it really good BUT!! I am making some training videos at home for use at work on a mixture of NT and XP machines with standard Media Player codecs - cannot install other codecs due to company policy. If I create an MPEG 1 with VS10+ I can set the video at any res up to 720x576 and so long as the audio is turned off it will play at work. As soon as audio is on as well it wont play at work, Media Player reporting unrecognised file format. They play OK at home with the Ulead codec. Is there any setting on the Ulead codec which can be played on a bog standard XP install? My first video was made with Nerovision express and this plays ok at work but res is only 320 x 288 so video quality is poor. Can the Ulead codec which is in the <create video - custom - encoder drive>r be changed to anything else. All help gladly welcomed. Home PC is a compaq presario with an Athlon XP 2.6 processor which works quite well.

I'm not the expert on this, so hopefully somebody else can answer more directly.

Does Video Studio give you any audio options with MPEG-1 video? (I Don't have VS on this machine.) You may have a choice of Layer I, II, or III. Layer III is MP3, and I'm pretty sure Media Player comes with an MP3 decoder (It does not come with an MP3 encoder).

I think you'll have the best luck with WMV (Windows Media Video). The codec should be installed (and work) with every Windows Media Player installation.

I found this page about WMP and codecs. I once found a web page that listed all of the codecs that come with WMP, but I couldn't find it just now. :(

Thanks for comments. As far as I can tell I can only set the sample rate and bit rate for the audio, Ive tried 48Khz and 44 khz with various bit rates. I have now downloaded GSPOT via your codec info page suggestion and can now analyse further. Thanks
