Start w/Clip, Fade to DVD Menu

Post by Black Lab »

I'm at work and don't have VS8 in front of me. With that said, I read something in a magazine about starting a video with a montage clip and fading that into the DVD menu page. Commercial movies sometimes do that. Is that possible in VS8? I don't recall that it is - I think the menu page has to be first - but I could be wrong. Does Movie Factory, or some other application, do that?

You can do this in either DVD Movie Factory or DVD Workshop. In DVDMF, create the video with fade ending with a still of menu. Check play first play video option and when it is done playing it will go directly to your menu. There will be a slight pause but it works. In DVDWS you have more manual control and customized layout of the DVD menu giving it more of a "Commercial DVD look", not template driven like DVDMF. Matters on the version, DVDWS1.3 you would set time duration for first video the same as it's length and then link to specific menu. In DVDWS2 almost same setup but use the auto activate option.

They actually trick you into thinking it's fading, there has to be a pause as it loads the menu. What they'll do is fade out the first play clip to black then fade in the menu from black. Makes it look seamless.

That's fine with me. I was just looking to do something different. I'll have to look into those apps.

Thanks for your replies.

Within the "Create Disc" option of VideoStudio you can have a video clip play before the menu appears - so that you could have a Logo or opening sequence which has to be watched before getting to the menu. On the first burning screen import your Logo etc. in first then make sure you 'click to tick' the "First Clip as First Play Video" option - then insert the rest of your videos.

Maybe with high-end Hollywood DVD authoring programs they do this, with Ulead products? After the first video plays and fades to black, your menu starting in black and fading in will show your button location the whole time. The motion menu background will do as desired but not the buttons. Unless there is a global function I'm missing. Maybe if you play with the button's transparency or make invisible buttons this may work. I'll have to give it a try. I personally have been pleased with creating first video with fading in company logo that fades to black and then fades in on my desired menu still. Then slight pause as new menu shows up and from there a selection can be made. In preparing all of my final DVD's play selections beforehand, in my editor I start with the DVD menu still zooming in or out or any another effect and fade it to black and then start what will be the selected video fading in from black. I do not create a "play all" option otherwise when each video plays after eachother it would show my transition trick and that is why I set it to always return to menu. I think it gives it a more professional look.

Create a still image of your menu including the buttons., make a video 3 seconds long (or however long you want the fade) fading in. Use as first menu as a moption background with a timeout action so it goes to your next menu which is the real menu.

I haven't tried it but it should work almost seamlessy. DVD Workshop is one of the tools I'm still learning how to use. There may even be an easier way of doing it. Not sure if you could do this in VS8 or MF.

There are othe ways I have though of doing this using animated gif's etc., hven't gotten around to trying them though.

I'm sorry if I misinterpretted your first reply. To me it sound like two separate files. First play video that fades to black. Then it timesout and goes the the menu. Second video with still image of your DVD menu fading in from black. This one would have to be a motion menu.

Your second reply is exactly what I have been saying all along.

This is a picture of my menu with buttons.

Original menu used for my earlier still with the actual movie links.

Again that same original menu still.

 DOH! <makes mental note to read more carefully>

Like I said I'm still learing what you can do with WS, particularly what I can do with gif's, they seem very promising for making outstanding menus. Just haven't gotten around to trying anything out yet.
