The burner was the original from 2002. It was burning at 2X.
This is burning at 16X on a DVD-R.
My Ulead V9 usually takes around 1 hour to render about an hour before it starts to burn.

Many users find problems when rendering within the burn stage.
I realise that you had a burner hardware problem.
By rendering after editing, share create video file, I feel I have more control over the finished product.
The completed Mpeg being used to burn the dvd, rather than the project file.
I can play the Mpeg on my pc to check for errors, this plays smoother than the project file.
The mpeg could be used by other burner software to create a disc.
Although you may think you are creating an extra file and using more disc space, rendering in the burner creates the same size files,. In the create and burn folders.
The time taken is about the same, by creating a file first the process is split into two.
Create video file then burn.
If you feel ok with your process then that’s fine. But take a moment to explore the other possibilities.
