Devil has a problem

The saga is nearing an end, I hope. It seems that I was suffering a combination of a WS2 problem AND a burner problem.
The WS2 problem was that, on several occasions, it generated glitchy ISO files, when the starting point was MPEG-2 files (tried several times) generated in MSP8 from the timeline. This was resolved by taking the MSP8 AVI file as the starting point in WS2, even though the encoding settings were identical.
Both burners have shown anomalies, even with good files:
1. One burner was OK burning directly from WS2 but always glitched when burning from an ISO file, with any DVD±R/RW medium
2. The other burner recognised a 4x DVD-R blank as 19x and obviously refused it, although it successfully burnt an ISO file on a DVD+R 8x medium, at 4x. (The DVD-R, in a different burning software gave a Power calibration error message, but was burnt OK on the other burner, same make, same firmware!)
All media are recognised brands (Verbatim, Memorex etc.)
It looks like I'll have to scrap 2 Samsung DL burners, as well as being careful to encode in WS2, rather than MSP8. As the encoding engines are the same, it seems that the interface must be different causing ISO file glitches.
Anybody want to buy some coasters (this little exercise has caused me to produce quite a number, which is a first for me, even though most of the trials were done on RW blanks)?????

Couple of questions:
1) did you try burning the ISO images with the burning software I mentioned earlier?
2) when you encode in MSP8, did you check the "Add key frame at clip edge" in the options for encoding (I remember a while ago someone mentioned it helped them -- not sure what forum that was...)
Regards,
George

1. I tried three different softwares for burning from ISO:
a) WS2
b) MF3 Disk Creator
c) Deep Burn
The end results were identical for any given ISO file (I had 5 different ones at different times) on burner #2. None of them gave good results with ISO and burner #1.
2. No, I did not check that box. I thought about it and said to myself, "What is there to be gained by messing around with irregular GOPs?"

1) not sure about those burning softwares, I've had great success with the ones I mentioned -- but if the glitch is authored into the DVD, then no burning software will fix it...
2) are you using closed or open GOP's? afaik, the "clip edge" is only for the end (not clips within the video stream). But you might want to try closed GOP's (if not already)

The open GOP structure is BBIBBPBBPBBP (12 between I frames), the default for PAL DVD.
One of the first tries was with the MSP8 version of MF4, much more modern than WS2: same results, indicating that the glitches were already in the MPEG-2 file imported into the authorer.
I am toying with having a look at the new DVDLab 2.0 Pro, but it is somewhat over-budget for the moment, especially as I have to replace 2 burners.

To set Closed GOP's, go into the ADVANCED compression options in MSP8, and select the VIDEO SETTINGS tab. Then for Closed GOP Every -- change the value to 1Devil wrote:The open GOP structure is BBIBBPBBPBBP (12 between I frames), the default for PAL DVD.

Well I hope it isn't as resource hungry as the previous version. I gave that a try but found the processor at full 100% all the time and almost the entire 1GB of RAM used.Devil wrote:.......I am toying with having a look at the new DVDLab 2.0 Pro, but it is somewhat over-budget for the moment, especially as I have to replace 2 burners.
Perusing the forums, it probably is (one says it's worse!) but this doesn't worry me because I'm a great believer in only one thing working at any given time on my video computer.sjj1805 wrote:Well I hope it isn't as resource hungry as the previous version. The guy who complained it was worse stated he had set virtual memory to zero. Not very clever!

Hi Devil,
some hints to try:
a) verify the disks with cdspeed if you have any drive (burner or read only) supporting it
b) instead of creating iso-files create a dvd folder and burn e.g. with nero (I think there is a free trial version available)
c) you can try the new dvdlab pro for 30 days
d) you can play dvd-folder with pgcedit or ifoedit
e) you can copy back the files from dvd to your hard drive and eventually do a binary compare
Hope any of these helps
