Erase your flash card with PC software

Post by The Old Timer »

Generally is it considered safe to use your PC's software to erase your camera's flash card? I have heard contradictory things about this.

The only ones I can speak on is my Sony memory stick, and PNY SD. I've used my computer to re-format them, and not had problems. With my Sony, I use it with a MSAC Floppy Disc Adapter, and back before I had a card reader, I had to format it in the adapter, in the PC. Now it doesn't matter.

One thing I would be cautious about is if the camera has to write instructions to the card to function in the camera. Then I would only format it in that camera it is intended to be used in. I always delete all the files in the folder on the card, once they are transfered to my PC.

Regardless of what anyone says, I only format my memory cards in the camera. I have heard that a PC format has rendered certain cards unreadable by certain cameras.

BTW, I also usually (more often than not) just delete the images rather than format the card.

There is one more consideration you you should be aware of. A virus can be transmitted from PC to Card and effectively render your camera firmware inoperative.
