VS10 crashes when opening AVI or Mpeg

Post by Lope »

Just got the VS10. Won't open AVI or MPEG files....error message then closes????

Am I using the wrong codec?

Otherwise looks like a great product for movie making!

EDIT:
Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?)
---files are both avi and mpeg format, some are very small, maybe 1-2mb, others are larger. I have files from various sources, some I captured (from 8mm, vhs, and dvd) using WinFast or Movie Maker 2, some are just downloaded from the web.

What devices are involved and their mode of connection?
---not sure what this means, the files are simply stored on the hard drives.

Project Settings
---none, I'm just opening the program and trying to use the built in sample avi that's included when the program is installed. I cannot get as far as creating a project before it crashes. Just trying to import any file by browsing the program immediately produces an error and closes. Sometimes it doesn't crash until I try to drag the file to the timeline. Doesn't matter if I import avi, wmv, mpeg, wma, etc.... Even if I drag the ULead sample file down to the time line the program crashes.

Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD)

PAL or NTSC
---as far as I know, everything I work with is NTSC.

Error Codes (if any)
---AppName: vstudio.dat AppVer: 10.0.0.0 ModName: uvwmf.vio
ModVer: 8.0.0.0 Offset: 00017a2e

Surely you dont want me to copy and paste the entire txt log output file that was generated?? (I dont see any way to attach the txt file here) This error was generated simply by dragging a wmv file to the viewer window. File properties include WMV 9 (164kbps, 24 bit, stream name = video 2) and WMA 9.1 (267kbps, 16 bit, 2 chan, 44.1khz, 13 sec duration)

It should be noted that a couple of days ago my geeky husband tried to remove Arcsoft Showbiz 2, including some of its registry entries. This was the result of not being able to author dvd's without getting errors and dvd's that would not play correctly (buttons dont work, no sound, etc.) using the previously installed (but up to date) programs Showbiz and Sonic MyDVD. This Arcsoft removal attempt may have contributed to messing up some of the codec references?? About a dozen of the most recent Windows Hotfixes were also removed, but only if they generated no warning messages about programs that may not work if this is removed. But all of that was before I installed ULead. We have reinstalled DivX, reinstalled Media Player 10, RealPlayer10, QuickTime, xVid codecs, all of that was done before we installed ULead. Should I reapply XP SP2 also?? Please also note that some of these files will no longer play in WMP 10 either, while others that play fine in MP10 will make ULead crash.

Are we seeing spaghetti yet?

Any (and I do mean ANY) help is appreciated! - Lope

Hi Lope, and welcome to the forums..:)

In order to help you we need more information. Please read the following :
  1. Read This First Sticky
  2. Recommended Procedures
Also please complete your system information in your profile. This will help us in troubleshooting your problems now, and in the future this information will already be available, so you will not have to re-type it. The only thing we know about your system is that you have WinXP.

What type of AVI and MPEG files? AVI is a container, not a video format. They could be uncompressed, which takes about 60 gigs per hour, or DV, which is a slightly compressed, lossless format that takes about 13 gigs per hour, or greatly compressed formats such as DivX, and Xvid.

The MPEG formats include MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4. The latter generally are highly compressed formats.

How are you opening them?
