still pictures, video encoding

I am working on my first video project and I have two questions (I am usng MSP8).
1st: I have bunch of pictures in the slideshow with music, classic sentimental thing, but if i insert "standing/vertical" picture, not usual horizontal one , MSP8 stretches the picture to fit the screen. I dont want that. is it possible to make MSP8 to preserve the pictures size so that I would have the picture centered in the middle with two black bars on the side then?

2nd: what is the best free way to encode high quality video from MSP8? I dont wanna buy MPEG-4 plugin....what is the best free way to keep photos and occasional camera videos in the project in high quality for reasonable size of the file?

When you insert your image, in the bottom left corner of the insert image dialog window is a checkbox that reads 'Keep aspect ratio with moving path automatically' Ensure that this is checked.
