VS9 does automatic "fit to burn" ?

Post by ghoofie »

So my newest question is in regard to selecting HQ, GQ, etc in the burn disc manager.

The little pop up box appears and you can select HQ, GQ, or SP, etc.
So I know that HQ will give you about 1 hour to a disc. So it appears that when the pop up box appears, HQ is already selected so I just close the box. Now then, if my elapsed time for my project is about 1 hour and 10 minutes, the burn dialog doesn't say anything back to me. It just happily burns the disc. So does anyone know if it is quietly adjusting for the extra 10 minutes ? Or does it automatically burn the entire disc at GQ, which estimates about 90 minutes ? I know you can custom select the burn 'quality', but I'm just wondering what these standard settings are doing ?

This is getting fun !!
And you all on this forum are quite fun too !! :)

Those settings are a little bit flexible as to how much exactly you can fit on a disc. With HQ, for instance, it will fit 'about' an hour, using 8000 kbps as a bit rate and standard LPCM audio. The latter creates large files. So if, for instance, you use a much smaller, compressed audio format like Dolby or mpeg layer 2, there will be extra space on the disc and thus you can squeeze 10 or 15 minutes extra of HQ video on to that same disc. In other words, the HQ, GQ etc are only guides. But if you exceed the limit of space, VS does not automatically do anything. It will certainly not suddenly change its instruction from HQ to GQ, and especially not halfway during a burn. Instead, it will either tell you there is not enough space on the disc before it starts to burn, or else (worse) it may try to burn the disc as it is, and stop before the end because it only suddenly 'discovers' there is really not enough space...
