I think it is 'thin' only as in the new Apple branding of recent products as 'Thin Apple' --as in "the new Thin Apple laptop". But from what I can see of it in photos on the web, the connecting pins are absolutely standard 6 pin plugs. So I would go for that. Firewire is Firewire, unless it is Firewire II, and transmits the same volume of data through the same plugs (400 Mbps as opposed to Firewire II which does twice that. But don't worry about Firewire II. I am sure your device would only be using Firewire I anyway...)
By the way, have you done a Google search. I just did one for 'apple thin' and got all sorts of responses. E-Bay has them for US$8.99 or less.

Thanks for all your help, guys. I made a DVD of some home movies last night using the advice you gave me and it took only 29 minutes to burn a 1-hour DVD. Of course the Create Video File took a while but I'm very happy with the results!
I have another question (I should probably post it in a new subject) - when I made my menu, I wanted to have a title menu but I couldn't figure out how to get from that menu to the chapter menus. The only link on the page was the "play" button which would start the videos. How do i have a title menu that takes you to the subsequent chapter menus?

Hi - I'm back! Well, I bought an inexpensive 6 to 6 Firewire cable off eBay and connected it but the software is not recognizing my DV source! I'm beginning to wonder if the device really has the option of converting analog signal to DV. I read on the Pinnacle forum that this device can only talk to the computer via the USB cable, so I guess USB is intended to be the only output. Okay, fine, but why does it have a DV I/O port? I mean, if you have a digital camcorder wouldn't you just connect it directly to your computer via the Firewire cable like heinz-oz said? Why go through the Pinnacle?
This is how I set it up: I connect my Sony TRV81 analog camcorder to the video and audio inputs of the Pinnacle 700-USB. I connect the Pinnacle to my computer via Firewire cable. This didn't work. Then I added the USB connection of the Pinnacle output to my computer and this still didn't work.
Mind you, I am able to capture analog video fine, so I won't be lost if I can't resolve this, I was just trying what you suggested by using a Firewire to get a better quality capture.

The Pinnacle 700 maybe the problem. It maybe that it can only communicate using Pinnacle software. Sony and Kodak are notorious for proprietary devices and software.
Is your computer acknowledging the connection of the either the USB or Firewire? If your system can not see it, then no software will be able to until then. If you computer is able to see it, then programs should be able to. Are you trying to capture using VS? Have you tried the setup, however use Pinnacle to capture? If you can, then capturing it with Pinnacle and then importing the captured video into VS would be ok..

The DV port is labeled In/Out. Maybe it's for people with a digital camera but no IEEE 1394 port on their computer???
Pinnacle tells me it can't connect to my input device. I'm thinking that since the Firewire cable goes from the Pinnacle to my computer, and not through my camcorder at all, that it isn't really serving as an input.

I think, in retrospect, that Ron/Vidoman is right and that you would have to use the Pinnacle software (Pinnacle Studio) which came with the capture device, to actually capture DV video. You could always try installing that software and see if it captures DV (I'd be very surprised if it didn't). But you could then import that DV into VS for editing and authoring. (To be the devil's advocate here, you could even try Pinnacle Studio for editing as well and see how that pans out. Be aware, though, that like Video Studio and for that matter most other editing software of which I am aware, Pinnacle Studio causes quite a variety of problems for quite a variety of users.)
Mind you, I can't really see why you would have to use Pinnacle Studio for capture of DV format via Firewire, if you can use Video Studio to capture in another format using the USB connection ...

What I don't understand is why the heck WIN XP is not recognizing the device when it is plugged into the firewire port. Maybe this has to do with the fact that the PC port is on a Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 video card?
Maybe the Audigy driver needs to be updated?
As long as XP does not see the device as a DV device, we are pushing a string I fear.

But I AM using Pinnacle's software for capture! I like to edit in VideoStudio, though.
It looks like I might have a problem with my system not recognizing my Firewire after all. In Device Manager, there's a yellow question mark and exclamation point next to Other Devices/Pinnacle Systems Marvin Series. Under Properties, it says the location is "on OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller" but drivers are not installed. I tried installing drivers from my Pinnacle installation CD, but it can't find them.

That's no surprise. XP will look in the root directory and if it finds nothing will quit or install a standard driver.hagadorn wrote:Good idea, but Windows couldn't find the drivers on the Creative CD or floppy.
Have a look at your disk and see if there is a folder IEEE1394 or firewire on it. If there is, point XP to that folder.
Another possibility is to use the auto install process of the driver disk. Normally it comes up with a list of things that can be installed, maybe there is something there. Having the exclamation mark next to the IEEE1394 host controller in Device Manager explains why XP doesn't see it.
