Hi,
I'm a Vegas user who switched to VS10+ for it's HDV capabilities. I'm having a little trouble getting used to the editing interface and was hoping someone can give me a few tips.
I've got 4 hours of HDV video that I'm trying to cut down to 20 - 30 minutes. As a test I started to edit the video that I intend to have in the middle of the finished product. Now that I'm a little more comfortable with the editing process I want to start on the beginning. Trouble is I don't want to have to redo everything I've done so far. Is there a way I can add a bunch of space or "time" in front of the video I've edited together so far? Everything in this editor seems to snap back into place unlike my Vegas configuration. To insert time in Vegas I'd simply select everything I have so far and drag it to the right. I realize I could keep adding video in the front but it sounds like a lot of dragging and dropping. I'm also considering creating 4 separate projects, one for each major section of the video, and then combining them at the end. If I render each project as HDV MPEG2 at the end and then combine all 4 mpeg streams in a new project am I setting myself up for a loss in quality? I would hope that the smart render feature wouldn't rerender the entire project.
Any thoughts?
Paul

Ripple Editing
I turned Ripple Editing on and inserted a color on the video line for 3 minutes. This gives me the separation I was looking for. I'm still not sure how easy it will be to add clips to the start of the timeline versus the end. I believe right now clips are inserted at the end which will mean I'll have to drag them back to the front.

Paul,
You don't have to insert anything in the timeline to force separation - just drag your clips wherever they belong in the time sequence. If you have ripple editing enabled, the video clips and every other object on the timeline (e.g., music) will move out to make room. Be sure to enable every track that you want to ripple.
I use the scissors control to make most of my cuts. Select the video clip in the timeline, use the vernier control right next to the scissors to move right up to the frame that you want to begin the new segment. The scissors will cut immediately before the displayed frame. The least significant digits on the display are the frame count within a second of time (1 - 30). If you want to remove a section of bad video you can make two cuts and delete the middle. If you want to interchange the beginning with the end, just drag the end clip ahead of the beginning. Etc.
You can remove unwanted video from the beginning or end with the Mark-In ("[") and Mark-Out ("]") buttons.
There are more exotic tools for editing - the Multi-Trim control in the menu will let you make several cuts on one video clip at the same time.
BTW, please fill out your profile so that we know whether you are NTSC or PAL, what your computer specs are, etc.
Edit: PS, there are two ways to combine the DVD-compliant video from separate projects
(1) You can place them sequentially in the timeline and create another video file or
(2) You can open a new project, select Share/ Create Disc, and then press Select Video file, for every one that you want to burn to DVD.
Some users have complained that the latter method results in a slight time gap between video file during playback. I don't find this objectionable because each video file is a story unto itself, if you do it right.
In any case, you will not suffer any loss of picture quality as long as you enable "Smart Render" and check "Do Not Convert Compliant Videos" when creating the video file (method 1) or creating the disc (method 2).
