Movie in USV 10 too big to burn

Post by bilc »

Hey guys....got a problem. I created a video in USV 10 from two VHS tapes of a party adding transistions and 5.1 surround sound. It came out great and I am proud of the results. The problem is the run time of the feature is 2 hours 4 minutes and 21 seconds long ( 4976 MB ) and when attempting to burn it to a single layer DVD with Nero I get a message the file is too big ( only have space for 4482 MB on a new disc ) Well I have 2 choices, [ 1 ] go back and cut some action out of the film or [ 2 ] purchase a DVD duel layer disc. I tried using a program called DVD shrink to reduce the file size, but the program does not see the mpeg movie. I'm sure some of you guys had this problem would appreciate knowing what you did.
Thanks

Several possible actions:
  • 1. render again with lower bit rate
    2. don't go to "Burn disk", create DVD folders or ISO file and burn that with Nero
    3. start a new project in VS and load the mpeg file, create the DVD folders on the HDD and use DVDShrink to shrink the DVD folder

Re 2: if it is clearly above the size of a single layer disc, and you do as Heinz suggests (and I agree), don't try to burn to disc because that is pointless -- it is too big (unless you are using a dual layer disc). But if you produce a Video folder (Video_TS), not only will DVD Shrink see it, but also programs like Nero Recode since it is a legal Video_TS and not subject to copyright protections...

Bilc,
Forget about using a DL disc with Ulead VS10. They haven't solved, or acknowleged the burning DL problem, and hasn't gotten back to us on it. Other software, I created DL disc, without a problems; and I'm not wasting anymore DL disc; expiermenting, being a unpaid Beta tester for them, until they get a patch. I'm Doing that for Pinnacle now, with their buggy S10. If it wasn't for 5.1 audio, DL disc; VS7, worked fine for me.
What the 2 guys above say is correct, but..... I hate lowering the quality of my DVD's to VHS quality, as much as hated looking at VHS tape, after having a Beta system, when they first came out. VHS quality did get better though.
What I do, is to make 2 DVD's, save the original project, so when the DL burning finally works with VS10, you can make your DL disc, if you want.
Becareful not to delete the video clips, if you want to do the DL later; it's a bad habit of mine, I hate seeing video clips on my HD's, once a final AVI file is made; then I get rid of it also, once I make a ISO file of it, (regretfully so, a few times).
Load the project, find a point; for the second half, delete the whole second half; then, if you want put somewhere in the beggining; (title) "Part 1", and at the end; "End of Part 1". Save the project, (using, save as; use a new name) so you'll know, it's only the first half. Close the project, after you saved it. Open the original project again, remember where you ended part one; delete the first part. Now this leaves only the last part. Place a small title, if you'd like; "Part 2", and at the end; "End of part 2". Save the project, (using, save as; use a new name), so you'll know it's part 2. When time permits, open up the project for part 1, render, burn; and if you want to make copies for someone; a backup; make a ISO file. I compared, and found ISO files, better than the same project saved with the VOB files, at the same bitrate. After DVD part 1 is burned, or you just rendered for ISO files; when time permits again for rendering, burn part 2, with another ISO file. Be sure to name you ISO files different, so it doesn't overwrite the other, one of my programs does this; I'm not sure of which one it is. Once you have your two DVD's, and or two ISO files; a ISO file on a 16X burner @12X takes about 7 minutes, each to burn, no rendering; if you don't verify it. Why 2 DVD's? after a hour, people may need/want to get up, it's break time.

afaik, the ISO file that gets created uses the VOB files that the program creates -- I'm not sure how it can have better quality :?:

Also, for Dual Layer discs, when you burn them to your hard drive, do they play back from your hard drive properly (using a software dvd player) :?:

We are talking about VHS footage that comes in just above the SL size. Are you seriously suggesting to go DL, never mind the problems with VS 10, to preserve a bit of quality that wasn't there to start with?

Once the resulting mpeg file, as is now, is authored to DVD and stored on the HDD in a DVD folder (Video_TS), I'm certain that DVDShrink would not have any problem with it and the resultant quality loss be that minute that this is the right way to go. If it was way above the file size, that's different, but as it stands now?

If the source is VHS tape, why are you using 5.1? You can save a little bit of space by going to 160Kbps stereo AC-3 Dolby Digital. If that still doesn't fit, just lower the video bitrate a little bit.
