Can someone tell approx. what an acceptable amount of dropped frames is for a standard 1 hour Mini-DV tape capture? As I am capturing tapes, I seem to be getting a somewhat varying number of dropped frames per tape. Also, does using your pc for other tasks during capture affect frame dropping.
Thanks!

I regard zero dropped frames as being the acceptable limit. In the past, I used to get them when I started a capture -- just a handful. But as I always started my captures before the section I was interested in, to make sure I got the exact start of that section, I knew I would be cutting out the section with the dropped frames anyway. I also tended to put the dropped frames at that time down to my klutzy initiation of the capture process anyway.
There is a tiny, freeware program, WinDV, which you can download. It only does captures (and exports back to camera). But it seems to be able to handle it with no dropped frames. So try capturing with that, and then import that captured DV into Video Studio for editing.

As Ken said, Zero dropped frames is the maximum I would accept. I have captured many a one hour tape with no dropped frames at all.
Having other tasks running may influence the performance of your PC. What is the platform you capture on? Notebook? Check if UDMA is enabled for your HDD. I take it you are capturing to DV-AVI?

Dropped Frames on Capture
Had numerous problems with getting quality capture with VS. Fiddled with settings for too long, VS frustration started setting in. I am sure that I did not have some certain setting quite right, but wanted to get the job done and start editing. I agree that WINDV freeware program is wonderful for solving this capture issue. You would think Ulead would just buy this guy's program and make it the capture module for VS, works great, easy to set up and understand and not problems with capturing from Cam.
