Error when importing from dvd

Post by kickrz »

Can any one tell me what this error is:

Failure to read dvd information
Report ID 0x80040901(2305)

We just got back from a family vacation and I would like to pull the movie off my mini-dvd-r and put it on a regular sized dvd-r.

Before this project I was able to pull off video from the mini-dvd-ram disc and that all went well and burned fine.

This mini-dvd-r I am trying to pull video from does have a few spots where it gets pixelated and glitches, not sure why it does it but I would love to get it into this program so I can edited these rough spots out...will that be possible or is the error related.

Thanks for any and all help, I hope I have explained my self ok, this is all very new to me.

Hi Kickrz, and welcome to the forums..:),

First I'm going to ask if your camcorder and your computer has a firewire port? If so that might be one way to get the video clips transfered.

Next, how are you importing the clips? Are you using the method described in this tutorial? Importing DVD Files <--Link to tutorial.

I'm not familiar with the miniDVD camcorders and how the DVDs and Ram Discs are. I have read posts here, where it was mentioned that the disc may need to be finalized before VS will import them. Could this be what is keeping your's from being imported?

What will help us help you, would be to complete your system information, in your Profile Page here. Just click on the Profile link at the top, and complete as much info as you can. Also you could provide the information on your camcorder (make, model)?

Thanks for the warm welcome :D

The camcorder I have cannot be connected to the computer at all! This part sucks I know but hey you buy cheap you get cheap right!

Yes I am following the tutorial and like I said I already burned one disc that went extremely well. Also the disc has been finalized and I have no problems viewing it on my computer.

I think I got most of the info in my profile but wasn't sure what all the numbers mean so I will post them below
Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz
3.01 GHz, 1.00GB of RAM

The camera is a Hitachi DZ-MV730A.

One more thing. Just before I got the above error I was able to get to 61% imported, I tried a completely different mini-dvd-r and with that one I get to where it says import dvd and you have to click on the chapters to include, as soon as I click on one the whole program freezes......something again it never did with the first one I did.
I really want this to work so I can decide on a program to buy.

Thanks! :D

This is not good... :(
camcorderinfo.com wrote:Editing (3.0)
Editing footage captured to DVD disc is tricky. There are rudimentary editing options available both on the camcorder and in the included software. DVD camcorders and DVD media are not meant for editing. These days, the DVD camcorder in general is made for gimmicky convenience, to allow users a quick method to record onto media which can be immediately played on devices that most consumers have, DVD players. Where editing really lacks is once you get the video into your computer. It is very hard, nearly impossible to turn DVD video into something that a standard video editor like Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere or Sony Vegas Video can handle.

Compression (5.0)
Video is record to DVD-RAM and conforms to the DVD-VR standard, with stills conforming to both the DVD-VR standard and JPEG. Audio uses MPEG2.

Media (5.0)
The DZ-MV730 records to DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Unlike Sony camcorders, it cannot record to DVD-RW, DVD+R, or DVD+RW discs. It can capture still images to SD or MM card.

I know you probably are, but I need to ask to make sure..:) Have you disabled any background apps that might interfere with this? Do you have any other DVD authoring apps installed, like Nero or Roxio?

Have you checked to see if your DVD (for your computer) firmware is up to date? If not you might try updating it.

From what I read on your camcorder, it seems that it is going to be difficult to edit the video. Hopefully one of the real pros will respond shortly.

Kickrz,
I checked a review of your camcorder at http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Hi ... Review.htm and, sure enough, there is neither USB nor firewire connection.

Here is something to try. Put the miniDVD in your computer DVD drive and use the windows explorer to copy the contents to your computer disk. Locate the .vob file and change its extension to .mpg. Ignore the warnings. Then open Video Studio with a new project, select the file into the library and see if you drag it directly into the Edit timeline. You may be able to edit that. If there is is a corrupt section of video, see if you can remove it. Good luck! :D

Well Thanks :D

I am baffled since the one I was having the most problems with before downloading this trial was the mini-dvd-ram disc and that one I had no problems editing or burning at all.

I shall wait and see I still have 27 days left before my trial runs out...LOL.

Thanks Again!

I have 3 .vob files do I change them all??

Video_TS.vob
VTS_01_2.vob
VTS_01_1.vob

Just try one first. There may be several vob files, depending on how the camcorder organizes things on the DVD. If one works, try the others - they may be different recording sessions. :D

Ok when I go to the dvd there is one folder called Video_ts and another called Dvd_cam.
In Dvd_cam there is 1 .ifo file, in the other is the 3 files above and 2 .bup and 2 .ifo files now if I copy that complete folder ( video_ts) I get an error that says it can't copy VTS_01_0:Cannot read from the source file or disc.

It does copy 1 .vob file and if I change that to mpg and do what you said all I get is a black screen with 2 blue horizontal bars. No footage.

Try copying just the .vob files separately to see which one fails. Some may work.

Edit - I finally located an old Video TS folder and all the video is stored in a file with file name VTS_01_1.VOB. The DVD menu video is stored in VIDEO_TS.VOB

Well I tried VTS_01_2.vob and fot an error Cannot Copy: Data Error ( cyclic redundancy check)

VTS_01_1.vob worked but it is only 8 seconds long

Video_ts.vob is the black screen with 2 blue lines.

Am I completely screwed here?? Is there maybe another program that can help me to get it to the point where ulead will allow me to edit it??

Thanks so much for your help!!

I think you have a corrupted camera DVD. Does this disk play in a set top DVD player?
You may need to capture the contents as analog via the DVD player.

I haven't played it just in a regular dvd player but it plays on my computer and on my camera.

See the problem is the glitches in it and I was hoping that there is a program that would allow me to view it just like I do on my camera so I can cut the glitches out. This was my daughters first vacation so I really want this to look better then it does.

"You may need to capture the contents as analog via the DVD player."
Can you tell me what you mean by this.....I have no clue!

Thanks

That should only be a last resort. You play your video in a device which plays it and capture the analog signal coming from that device.
