Cannot import MPEG files to UVS 10. Stop occors after 12 sec
Can anybody help?
I want to import my MPEG files, which I have produced with my Sony camcorder DCR DVD505 on a miniDVD and have copied to my computer disk.
The files have been stored in Video Mode.
I have selected HQ (high quality) on my Sony camcorder.
A.) If I import the VOB file, the movie stops after aber 15 seconds. I can see the rest of the movie on the edit screen, if I move the pointer at the time line. But I cannot access these parts for editing purposes.
B.) If I rename the VOB file to a MPG file and import that file, only the first part of 15 seconds will be shown (the rest is not accessable as mentioned in A. above)
Can anybody help me. Please try to answer in a good English, I am a German.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Dr.onestone, and welcome to the forums..
First we need to determine how you are importing them. Are you using the method described in this tutorial Importing a DVD into VideoStudio. <--Link to tutorial
You can use that method importing from a DVD or from the folders copied to your HDD.
Another consideration, did you finalize the disc in your camcorder?

Thanks for trying to help me!
1.) Yes, I have followed exactly the steps you have proposed. May be, I should remark, that after clicking the folder "VIDEO_TS" all files are listed with its names in a BROWSE window - not in the window "Select Scenes to Capture" with thumbnails, as your tutorial describes. May be it is worth to mention that I use the latest version of VS (currently the free test version), but in German language. But I think this should not be a problem, shouldn't it.
2.) Nevertheless, if I click the file VTS_02_1, I can import das file. Then I click the START button and the movie starts to play without any problem. But after exact 11:16 seconds it stops. When I move the pointer at the time line, I can see everything of the track, which is exactly 51:08 seconds long. But by clicking the START button, the movie stops again and again at 11:16 seconds. I consider that the PC is doing something, because I cannot move the time line pointer for some time after clicking the START button. As mentioned before the video is only shown, if I move the time line pointer.
3.) Looking to my folder VIDEO_TS, I find the attributes:
VTS_02_1.VOB 58.240 kB
The VS generates during the import the files
VTS_02_1.ADX 32 kB
VTS_02_1.VDX 41 kB
As I have described in my intro topic, I have recorded this track with my Sony DCR-DVD505E in High Quality mode and Video mode.
4.) May be it is worth to mention that the same fault occurs with any other movie, as for example with VTS_01_1.VOB, which is 501.696 kB big. After 11:16 seconds it stops. Some 0:5 seconds will be added by my PC from time to time by processing the rest of the video.
5.) Yes, of course, I have finalized my video.

This a real deadlock situation for me!
I cannot send you a copy of the file VTS_02_1.VOB to ask you whether the same fault occurs to you, because my Sony camcorder records in PAL. And I cannot send a copy of the file VTS_02_1.VOB to the technical support of Ulead, because I currently use a trial version without a registration number. But I am not willing to purchase this product, because, as you may understand, the VS software is useless for me, if this main essential function is not working!
I cannot understand that this problem occurs only to me. The Sony camcorder DCR-DVD505E is not an exotic device, the used video mode in high quality should be a standard procedure, and my recorded sample can be displayed by the Windows Media Player without any problem.
Greatings to everybody - please don't let me alone with my problem!

Are you importing the DVD or adding the VOB file?
From what I understand in your post, you are able to select the VTS_02_1.vob file. You are not supposed to see this file in the "Import DVD" dialog window because you are only allowed to select the "title/program" or the "chapter/cell".
If you right click on the Timeline/storyboard then choose "Insert Video", then browse inside the VIDEO_TS folder, you will see the VOB files inside it but its not recommended, nor renaming the VOB to MPG.
Try downloading the trial version of DMF5 and use its IMPORT DVD function. It has the same import dvd interface with VS10, except that DMF does not allow importing of VOB. Try it and see if the same thing happens.

Sorry, Ploggy, but VS10 does indeed have a new feature -- and I think you may in fact have been agreeing with this in a round-about way -- and that is being able to import a VOB file direct. In other words, the program sees a file with a VOB extension as a valid video file. What is more, I have used it successfully a number of times (though not with mini DVDs from a camera). So I am not sure why you are saying this is not recommended.
The only quirk, though, is that I usually get a message from Video Studio that the VOB is not currently in a form which can be immediately imported. And it then asks if I want it to convert it so that it can be imported. I answer OK and it takes a few seconds and imports the file successfully. That is using 'Insert Video' as opposed to Import DVD/DVD-VR, and with the contents of the DVD already on my computer, rather than on the DVD disc itself. But Dr Einstein (nice Germanic pun, by the way, dr 'onestone'
) already has his DVD imported to his computer.
And while simply renaming the VOB extension to mpg may not work all the time, it is certainly a course of action we recommend if a direct 'Import' or 'Insert' command fails.
Apart from that, though, I don't know what is causing Dr Einstein's current problem because the process works for me.

Answer to Joe Louvar
Thanks Joe for your reply.
But I think this will not help me:
1.) I am not very convinced of the software Picture Package. I have installed it and I have found that the USB driver implements a bug to my MS Windows operating system: At shutdown the Sony USB driver announces a severe error. Thus I have not played a lot of time with that software.
2.) Why should I transfer the software with that Picture Package? I have just copied all files from my miniDVD to a folder on my notbook disk and try to process these files with VideoStudio. Why should I follow the detour with Picture Package? Is this necessary?

After you finalize your mini 505 DVD put the mini DVD in your computer DVD drive and transfer it to your hard drive using Sony’s “Picture Package”. Then just load or open each mpeg file into VS10+. This may not be the best way to do it but it will work and at least give you a chance to checkout VS10+.
Oh and I think the PP default setting puts the DVD video folder under My Documents/Image Transfers and the folder should look like a date - I.e. ‘06_07_25 with the clips inside the folder.

Hello,
in the meantime I have tried to succeed with Pinnacle Studio 10.
But this was also not successful - the imported video cannot be viewed at all. As described before with Ulead VideoStudio 10 I can view at least the first few seconds of my video.
Thus - I come to the conclusion that my PC may be too slow to process the video data.
I use a notebook with Centrino cpu 1,72 GHz, 1 Mbyte RAM, Nvidia Geforce Go 6600 graphic card, disk with free capacity of 75 GByte.
Has anybody experiences or can anybody tell me whether the horsepower of my PC is too slow for importing the MPEG video data.
Many thanks for your help in advance.
Much regards

Thanks for your quick reply.
I have copied the VOB files from the miniDVD to my disk (thus, there is no probllem) and import the VOB file from the disk to Ulead VideoStudio 10. But, as I have described earlier, the import starts without any problem but stops after about 15 seconds. It seems worth to note that the total video can viewed using the MS Windows Media Player without any problem.
The VOB file is about 58 Mbyte. May be somebody want to help me and I can send this file to him to test the import. The only problem herewith: My Sony camcorder DCR-DVD505 and thus the VOB file is working in PAL.
Much regards

I am using miniDVD-RW.
But all actions with miniDVD we can forget, because this part was passed and I am working only on disk files.
Refering to your other question: If I use the function "Import From DVD Folder" and I click the VIDEO_TS folder, it takes some seconds and I can play the complete video in the thumbnail window without any problem. But the IMPORT button below the thumbnail windows keeps grey and I cannot import the video.
Is it possible that I have wrong settings?
Thanks for your help. If I would have the possibility I would send you over some Bavarian beers.
