crashes on capture

When I try to capture from my digicam, 8.0 goes into 'not responding' mode instantly - sometimes it will return to me but v-e-r-y slowly, but eventually the crash is complete and I have to reboot.

I am able to capture with the Windows movie maker, so I have been doing that and using ULead to edit, render and burn, but it is a naggy question - why won't capture work?

Your thoughts are welcome!

I am using a Dell P4 2.6hz in XP with firewire to a Panasonic GS200 cam.
