Add music to a silent video capture ?

Post by ghoofie »

If I capture an OLD home movie, with no sound, after
I capture it, when I create DVD, at that point can I drag in
some sound files from my computer (WAV or MP3 files?),
or do I need to capture the sound via my capture device while
I'm capturing the silent video, in other words, plug in the
audio cables from a sound source like a CD player so both
the video and audio get captured together. I'm not
concerned with syncing anything...just background music I
have selected.

Thanks.

You can add some sound files to the captured video file using Video Studio. Then you can burn whole on the DVD and you will have your old movie with added sound on DVD. That's what video editing applications are for :)

When you have your captured video in the timeline you can import any MP3 or .wav files you have into the music track so that it plays with your video - if you connect a microphone to your PC you can also add any narration you might want to.

You can also add titles at the beginning and end and anywhere throughout the video you think appropriate

You should also check out the Auto Music feature which uses SmartSound -- it lets you create an audio track tha exactly matches the duration of your video.

Hey thanks everyone. Lots of choices now.

Now my curious mind is wondering (and wandering) something
for you techies. If my video tape has no sound, when I'm
playing it into my capture device , will put any noise, hiss,
or such on the audio track ? I mean when I capture a 'regular'
video that has sound, isn't it doing an audio track at that time ?

Can't wait to try it in the next couple of evenings to see what happens.

It all depends on what is on the original "silent" sound track. If you do have hisses etc., simply split the original sound track from your video on the time line and delete it :)

... Or use the mute button on the original audio track.

By the way, some people have trouble when they use certain kinds of MP3. If you do, then simply convert it to WAV format, and the problem will most likely disappear.

I see the box for audio capture under capture options...but I can't select anything in the box. It won't let me uncheck the box that says "Capture audio". Looks like that would also do the trick, but me VS9 SE DVD version won't work for that.

Now you lost me, a bit  why would you want to capture sound that is not there? Background music you do not need to capture. It needs to be on your system as a file and you simply insert it into your project, if that's what you were talking about.

The 'capture audio' function is not for capturing the hiss or other audio from one of your video clips. It is for capturing, say, a track or tracks from a CD you have put in the CD drive of your computer. I have never used this function since VS7. Like Heinz, I use music I already have on my computer, ripped by other programs, and I use Nero Wave Editor to cut it to size (though there are free audio editors out there too). Then insert it in the audio tracks of my video. For voice commentary, I use a microphone into my computer (in fact, my Skype headset!) and Wave Editor for recording my comments. Then insert them as above -- though you can also do this within Video Studio.

OK...let me see if I can clear up the confusion.

There is a box that has 'capture audio' checked.
It seems that if you un-check it, then your capture
session will not pickup audio. However, the audio
capture box has everything greyed out, so I can't
UN-select 'capture audio'. That's all I was looking at. :)

There is in fact some tape hiss on the 'silent' VHS tape
I'm gonna capture, so I tried merely unplugging the audio
cables and voila....now the silent recording really is
silent.

Sorry I wasn't clear earlier.

But as the others were saying, you could simply mute the audio, or split it and delete it. More than one way to skin a cat I guess.

Unless there is something in VS9, I don't have a way of muting the audio
from my VCR other than unplugging the audio cable.

In VS10

1. In the Edit Step Options Panel, the Video tab, the top row (from L to R)includes the clip duration, clip volume, mute button, and fade in/out buttons.

2. If you right click on your clip in the timeline you can choose Split Audio. Your audio will then appear in the Audio track where you could simply delete it. There is also a Split Audio button when in Edit mode in VS10.

Oh. I was looking for a mute button in the capture stage. So you're saying just capture it as is..then when you bring it into your timeline,
edit the audio by muting ?
