Missing codec? Crashing while burning?

Post by akalt369 »

After loading VS9 into my husband's work computer (which has a dvd burner, mine doesn't) and editing 6 projects with total running time of 15:35, I got the following popup:

" A current Indeo codec is needed for this software... please obtain driver from http://indeo.ligos.com"
well, indeo wants $14.95 (!)

Tell me, should this driver not be bundled in the software disc I purchased?

It's ADS Tech = DVD Xpress DX2 CD, Ver 1.4
(contains drivers, Capwiz 3.8, ulead VS9SE DVD, DivX player) or so says the label.

Every time I tried to burn a DVD of each .vsp (six chapters in all- using the 'share' function of VS9) I'd get about 26% finished and one of two things would happen:
1. The VS9 software shut down all by itself.
2. A "this software needs to close" popup

You shouldn't need any 3rd party codecs. Did you load the ADS software on both computers?

What format did you capture to?

AVI/DV is the preferred format, but If your capture device can't capture DV, then MPEG-2 is the best 2nd choice because DVDs are MPEG-2.

If your source files are MPEG, they may be corrupted. MPEGs are not meant to be edited, and yours may have been corrupted by editing it. Try making a DVD from an unedited file. If that's the case, you may need a special-purpose MPEG editor.

:( Bummer! Not a good thing for your first project. Digital video is tricky. When you run into a problem, you never know how long it's going to take to solve it... Mostly, because everybody has a different hardware/software set-up, and everybody is doing something a little different from everybody else..

The Indeo codec should indeed come with VS9 -- at least the full version. I had this same problem when I first loaded VS9. In fact, I recall this very vividly because, fool that I was, I actually went to the Indeo site and paid for the wretched codec!!  Then, later, when I was exploring the main VS9 disc, I found the codec. If you put the disc into a disc drive on your computer, navigate to the VS9 folder, and then, when you select that, look for a folder labelled 'Utilities'. My Indeo folder is in that...

If you cannot find it on your disc, then I would have to guess that it has been taken out by the ADS people for space reasons, or else it just does not come with the SE versions generally.

As far as I was aware, however, it is not necessary for general projects. It is only required if you use any of the animations that come with the program (such as the bumble bee flying through a forest...)

Thank you both for your replies.

Doug,
ADS software loaded on both computers. Mine (without burner) says nothing about the missing codec. My computer is XP, hubby's is XPpro. I used the ADS CapWiz to create MPEG2 files from analog tapes on my hard drive.
How can I tell if the MPEG2's are corrupted? They seemed okay while editing in VS9. Of course, everything else seemed"okay" too...

Ken,
Thanks very much for the hint. I found the Utilties folder and the Indeo file-- will load it on hubby's computer when he gets home. Hopefully it will help. I also intend on buying a large and varied array of dvds-- maybe one will help.

reunion: leaving Wednesday morning. t-minus 40 hours!!!
