My DV support both 4:3 and 16:9 formats, there was one time I switched from one to the other on the same miniDV tape. After I transfered video to VS10, it seems not able to recognize the correct ratio and keep stick with 4:3 (that's what I started with on this tape). But windows media player plays the correct ratio on the same clip. Even the I set the "project property" to 16:9, those footages taped in 16:9 are compressed, they will only show 4:3 image with black banner on each side.
Could anyone enlighten me on this? Thanks a bunch!

First of all, you cannot mix aspect ratios within a project.
Secondly, without having any details on the equipment you use, I suspect that your camcorder alows to record in "wide screen" mode. That is still 4:3 aspect ratio but the cam only downsizes your vertical aspect and adds black lines top and bottom to give you the wide screen illusion.

You actually can mixed different ratio as long as they are from different video clips. And I did that before.
And I'm pretty sure the sony HC40 has true wide screen mode. The effective pixel won't be much less, or even more than 4:3 mode.
I may try spliting the video clip and see if it works for VS10. Any other input? Thanks.

For most TV sets still in 4:3, camcorder manufactures will not use 16:9 ratio of CCD if they are targeting mass public as of today. It's simply not efficient to hybrid between the two.

I think it depends on how you define the "true". HC40 utilize the pixel on CCD to make picture in wider angle instead of adding black bars on top and bottom of the picture like some other models do.
Sooner or later all the video format may converge to widescreen format, then there will be no "true widescreen" such a thing since everyone take it for granted that's how TV looks like.
But this is not what I meant to start this thread, I have a question and I need answer from people who has the possible knowledge about it.
