Cannot import DVD video created on VHS/DVD recorder

Post by forgondor »

Hello again,

I wrote earlier about problems with my capture card and we all came to the conclusion it just wasn't up to snuff. So I returned it and and the new VHS player I was using with it and for less than $50 I got myself a VHS/DVD recorder dual deck player as was suggested to me. My plan was to import the newly created dvd into VS and then do the editing as I wanted to. So I went ahead and put a disc in recording mode last night before going to bed and let it run. I woke up to find it full! :D I am sure the disc was finalized because that is the only way I was able to give it a title. I took it to the computer, and it played in Windows Media Center just fine. :D again. BUT when I tried to import the video into VS9 I get nothing. The disk is not recognized. :!:

Just the facts:
Disc type: 16X DVD+R, Memorex (I intended final DVD to burn at 4X)
Amount recorded to disk: 4.28 gb
Player: Samsung DVD-VR330
Recording mode: With the DVD+R disc you are not prompted to choose either V or VR mode, so I am unsure what mode it recorded at.

Thanks in advance for any help/advise/anger management ......

Before you ask: I used that type disk because that is what I have a stack of at home.

Are you importing the DVD files correctly as shown in this post:

I tried, but nothing happened after the "Import DVD" screen came up. I tried clicking on one of the titles and the hourglass started up. The progress bar across the bottom shows no progress and the it almost seems in a loop.

Help!!

First, how long did you wait before terminating? It does take some time, depending on your system performance. If there are several chapters under each title, then it will loop, importing each chapter then start over for the next.

Secondly, what do you have running in the background? Try to alot all possible resources to VS.

Thirdly, are you using the default working folder in VS, (C:\Windows\Temp) ? You may want to clear your Temp folders, so VS has plenty of room to work.

Do you have another DVD that you could try importing a title to see if perhaps your DVD is corrupt? Sometimes a corrupt video will play, but cause problems during other functions, such as creating DVDs. Did you also try to select a different title? (A check to see if there may be corrupt video files (VOB) on the DVD.)

Sometimes it works better if you copy the VIDEO_TS folder (and contents) to a hard drive, then import from the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive instead of the DVD-ROM drive. If you have multiple HD's, copy to one of them, then import to the other...

Wow, thanks for all the responses.

Vidoman: I let it run about 20 minutes without anything showing up in the progress bar. I'll try again, but how long do you suggest?
I close any background programs.
I just "cleaned" my hard drive. It's new and has about 80% free space (all intended for video work).
I will try another DVD, but either way this one will play on my computer screen (MediaPlayer, Realplayer and Intervideo at least).

George: I did try to copy it to the hard drive to my specific videos file and it wouldn't go. Nope, I already checked and I didn't go and write protect on myself.

Mad: Windows Explorer seems to recognize the files as long as I click the "all file types" at the bottom. Very weird looking names but I don't want to go into the disk right now as I hope it doing SOMETHING.
The disk is finalized, I'm positive.
You say, "DVD+R records in the standard DVD-Video mode with vob files etc.". I am currently trying again with DVD-RW in VR mode. Do you think that will work better? I have seen that discussion already but at the time it not help me because of my disk type. I will check it again.

Okay now, because I had to go to Staples to get the RW discs I talked breifly with an employee there about the situation. He said I need a DVD ripper to use just like you use to rip songs from your CD's. Is this right or was he just using up the time to stare at my chest?

Thanks all

Do you mean you were unable to copy the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive, or do you mean after copying the VIDEO_TS folder to your hard drive, you were still unable to Import From DVD (using the VIDEO_TS folder on the hard drive as the source) :?:

Wait!! I'm almost there! Recorded again last night in VR with DVD-RW, and the video came thruough. No audio. Do they have to be brought in seperately? BTW, I tried it with Sonic and it all came through so I know I am on the threshold of getting to edit here.

Okay, suggestions for the audio solution now.

Also, how did you get that little box around the writing in your last post, George.

Thanks.....again!

BTW, I read through that post/discussion again and was a little confused. I'm not dumb but I certainly am a newbie at this and all the terminology, etc. What would be the ideal output (type, size, etc). Thanks SO MUCH!!

Which version of VS9 are you using? It might not have Dolby Digital audio (AC3) support (like the TRIAL or a "lite" version)

I hit the QUOTE button in the post I want to quote (remove the text that is not being quoted), and then add my reply. Hit the QUOTE button (top right side of the post you want to quote), and you will see the code that is added before/after the text to be quoted...

I am using VS9 SE DVD. It had come included with that ADS capture card I had and have since returned.

I would rather use VS, but I am only getting audio in Sonic. It also is appearing to have "jerks" every now and then with Sonic. Could this be anything to do with a DVD encoder or decoder problem?

I also thought it might help if I tell you the files on the disk off the recorder:

Main folder: DVD_RTAV
Files inside: VR_MANGR (IFO file)
VR_MANGR.BUP
VR_MOVIE.VRO

But when I importing this is what I get under the DVD Import screen, along with it's information.

Lable: SAMSUNG DVD RECORDER VOLUME (Main folder)
------Original Program Chain (OPGC) (subfolder)
------Program 0 (subfolder to OPGC)
------Cell 0 (file in Program 0 folder)

Lable Info:

Lable: SAMSUNG DVD RECORDER VOLUME
Format: DVD-VR

OPGC Info:
Original Program Chain
Number of Programs: 1

Program 0 Info:
Program 0
Number of cells: 1
TV System: 97.9 fps

Cell 0 Info:
Cell 0 of OPGC 0
Number of audio streams: 1
Number of subtitile streams: 0
TV system: 525/60 NTSC
Frame rate: 29.970 Frames/sec
Start time: 00:00:00:00
Totoal Duration: 01:55:02:03

When Cell 0 is highlighted the audio section reads: Dolby Digital 2 Channel.

I hope this may be of some help; I am trying to do as requested and not make you all guess about what I have here.

Thanks,

First to respond to your response to mine (confusing isn't it..:) ), No it should not take anywhere that long. However I see you have that much figured out.

Now since you are using an SE version, it will not have Dolby Digital included. You could download a freebie codec that allows you to here Dolby, however not encode to dolby.
