After incalculable hours, posts here, searching the web, contacting Ulead (who are on a 3 year paid leave) leaving the wife alone in bed (prefer spending time with Ulead anyway). I can finally record sound on my DVD's.
I tried everything! But thanks to a member named Maddrummer3301 I have cracked it! One simple line in his articulate reply to me was - "Usually the capture card has an audio cable that plugs into the soundcard". DA_DA!!! NO-ONE TOLD ME THAT THE CAPTURE CARD HAS TO BE FED INTO THE SOUNDCARD!!!!. I stupidly thought the line in hole in the capture card meant - Line in ????? Naaaaaa stupid
Anyway, any problems at all, I am your man - I have had them all and can answer anything
P.S. Thankyou Maddrummer

Thankyou,
I believe I left you out of my approbation of all you amazing Ulead experts. If so, I thank you now. I cannot possibly put into words the value of the help you and others give. I gave a DVD slideshow compilation of scanned photographs of my three children accompanied by beautiful music, fade ins -outs etc. that perfectly pertained to the given era, circumstance, mood, ages from birth to now (15 - 30) to my childrens grandparents / great grandparents, and it was more emotional than I can ever possibly describe here. And - perhaps sadly - they play the DVD over and over. Probably the most worthwhile and valued present I have ever given them. And All thanks to yourself and people here.[/b]

It doesn't really make sense to me that a capture device would need to be plugged into a sound card -- if the sound card is doing the audio capture, what purpose does the other capture device play in this scenario, and why is the audio routed through it?
Incidentally, what is the make and model of the capture device?

I have that capture card, I bet... Winfast TV2000??
I recently swapped out the card and tried a different one, and wound up putting it back. At the same time, I manage to blow something in the sound input (integrated Soundmax) and had no sound like the OP.
It made sense to me that I could just run the sound from my source (satellite receiver) directly to Line In ("sound card" input). I tried it, but the sound was noticably worse. The satellite sound was very noticeably clipped (overmodulated).
Then I got a cheap soundcard and disabled onboard sound, to allow me to do it the mfr's suggested way, using the inside connector.
Sure enough, the sound is much sweeter again. I have no idea exactly why...
Another thing is, I leave the satellite receiver running all the time, not just when VisStudio is recording something... which means the sound is coming to the sound card 24/7. Just having the sound card do the work when it needs to feels better somehow

Torsten, while I certainly agree with your logic, the fact is that there are some devices out there set up this way. The very first capture device I bought was a well-recommended V-Gear PocketDVD, not dissimilar to a number of other brand devices I have seen: small box with yellow-red-white RCA plugs, S-Video pin, USB connection and a power connection if needed. And in fact it performed well, though I no longer use it. However, for a while I too had trouble capturing audio -- it was all, I thought, supposed to be transferred over the USB 2 connection. I simply never paid any attention to the 'Audio Out' plug on the side of the box... When I connected that to my sound card direct, the problem went away. But I still can't understand why the USB connection only carried the video...

Yeah, my WinFast TV2000XP Expert has a cable that connects to my motherboard. I have on board sound.
