Depends on your capture device, The AV out from your VCR is analog. Your PC cannot handle analog and needs a converter (capture device) to convert to digital. DV-AVI is the preferred if you want to edit, mpeg2 is the quickest if you do not need to edit. Some analog capture devices have hardware conversion to mpeg2 other do not and rely on the PC to do the number crunching. That requires a powerful machine.

Ordinarily, analog footage will be captured using the Upper Field First setting. However, there are a few capture devices out there that will capture everything using Lower Field First. Check the properties of your captured files and keep those property settings for render and burn and you'll be fine.

My particular capture card is reported by all Ulead software (MF, VS, MS, WS) that I tried as lower first.
But it's evidently and logically Upper first as is easily seen if I try to use Lower First.
So sometimes auto-detect is not working.
Try upper first and if it's shaky, it's the other way... Duh.
Be careful that you can only decide on a TV, preview or playing the MPG file on your PC (progressive) is not enough.
