vs10 creating a divx file

Post by jkane6 »

Hello, i have a divx certified dvd player, it plays a divx files really nice, the quality is great, it also gets me around the problem of size, 13 gigs of avi per hour vs 0.5 gigs. anyway, i also see that in vs10 you have 4 different types of mpeg4- and everyone says divx is mpeg-4, well if i burn any of the mpeg-4 output and play them in the dvd player, there is no audio, and the output is not as good as the divx file version.

so, since i may be dense, could some one give a step by step instructions to using vs10 to create a divx file format that will play on a divx ceritifed dvd player.

none of my attempts has created anything that is even close to the quality of the divx converter from divx, which takes a avi file and creates a divx file and plays nicely on divx certified dvd player, in my case is a philps dvp642/17. somewhere is i must have lost it on the mpeg-4 parms.

regards :?

Your problem is that you are choosing an mpeg-4 codec. While DivX is of course an mpeg-4 format, it always uses the 'cover' format of .avi. So In fact you can do it two ways.

If, like me now, you intend to make lots of DivX movies, then go to Tools > Make Movie Manager and select New. Make sure here you select 'Microsoft AVI' as the format. Give the new template a name (e.g. DivX). You will then get a new dialogue box with three tabs. Choose the third, headed 'AVI'. In the compression box, click on the arrow and you will be presented with a list of the AVI-related codecs on your computer. Among them should be the DivX one. Select it. Then immediately under the compression box is a button labelled Configure. Click on that to set the DivX codec to do what you want it to do. You may also want to change the audio format for your movies. You will now have a permanent DivX template, which will appear dow towards the bottom of the drop down menu which appears when in future you go to Share > Create Video File.

If you are only going to do it once, then you can do much the same thing. With your edited video in the timeline, select Share > Create Video File > Custom. Select Microsoft AVI as the general format, then press the Options button. You will now get the dialogue box with the three tabs mentioned above.

Haven't quite reached that point just yet. I have been wondering about the same thing, and had been thinking that it would follow much the same process as with mpeg-2s. But I have not yet experimented with trying to make menus...

Audio Divx and Menus / Chapters

Post by jkane6 »

Ken,

i will post you when i find something,

on the audio subject, i noticed that there are many options for audio in
the menu selection after i have selected divx, what is the standard audio that is usually on/in a divx file. (i.e.) when you are making a divx file in vs10, what do you select for audio?

regards
