photoimpact 11 shut down conflict with outpost firewall?

Post by ponsonbybritt »

I have never had a problem with this program until recently and I have been using photoimpact since version 3.2. I recently upgraded my firewall (agnitum outpost firewall 4) which features anti-leak components and much nicer security settings. My problem is that when I go to shut down photoimpact now, it hangs and I do not know why. I am not going to disable the firewall simply to close a graphic program, but I have tried countless times to create a proper set of rules for batchdl, iedit and iedit_ executables which should allow them to operate without the firewall getting in the way. I also found a uleadweb executable that may be for some other program on my system, but that too was added to the firewall's trusted list of applicaitons.

I am trying to figure out what component is trying to run while i shut down photoimpact aht might be causing this so that i can create a rule for it or just allow the process in general. I also should mention that i have installed third party plugins from xenosoft which may play a role in this, though they never seemed to cause any problems prior to the firewall upgrade.

Try the following:

On the Command Menu, select File\Preferences\Catagories:\PhotoImpact and uncheck Check Ulead's Web Site Every X Days.

The Browse Manager Cache may also be interfereing while index your drives.

Thanks. I think it had to do with the browse manager cache. I tried it today and so far so good.

Hi Oco, and welcome to the forums..:)

You quoted the OP, however I don't fully understand your purpose for doing so. Do you have the same problem? If so please post your question(s), and we will try to help..:)

Okay so here is what happened. When i changed the settings for the Browse Manager Cache it really had no effect. Turns out that Photoimpact loaded fine and shut down (at least on the first try) so long as I didn't actually use the program to open a picture or make any actual photo edits. Actually, it really only loaded and shut down when i used the desktop shortcut, which is something I rarely do since I have the program configured as my default photo editor in XP's Picture & Fax viewer. As I suspected, the firewall was causing the conflict but it took me a while to figure out just how. The component that Photoimpact is trying to utilize that prevents it from properly shutting down was the "rundll32.exe" file. By simply adding it to my list of trusted applications, the problem went away. Likewise, the Anti-leak component must either be disabled or configured to properly allow changes to be made to the run32dll.exe app so as not to create any more conflicts.

rundll32.exe is a Windows XP system file that allows other applications to run in the OS.
