Rotate (orientation) x,y,z bug?

Post by red255 »

Is there a problem (ie. bug) with orientation (rotate) and the x,y,z axis?

Place on object in the workspace, say a torus. Camera - front view. Torus edge-on. Select orientation (rotate), enter 90 in the "X" value, torus rotates to appear like a donut (OK), Now enter 90 in the "Y" value, torus rotates to edge-on view (OK), Now enter 90 in "Z" value - this time the torus rotates around the "Y" axis to appear like a donut - this should not have happened! The view should have remained edge-on with a 90 degree rotate. It appears that the Y and Z axis are confused, or is there another explanation?

Hi Red, and welcome to the forums..:)

No it's not a bug, actually it is performing as it should. If you add the rotations as you suggest, when you get to the z-axis rotation, it is acting on the previous location of the X and Y axis.

Try just entering the 90 deg Z axis rotation, and you get the results you are expecting, because the X and Y axis is 0. Howver since you have moved the X and Y axis 90 deg, then the Z axis rotates from the previous state. To see this enter the 90 deg Z axis rotation first. Then enter the 90 deg Y axis rotation, and finally the 90 deg X axis rotation.

Ron,

Thanks for the reply, I have been experimenting with rotation using your comments. Still have a few questions. Is there a rotation tutorial online?
