How to make good normal DVDs from High Definition source?

Post by Gazso »

Hello
I downloaded from ULead web-shop Video Sudio 10 Plus to capture and edit HD files from my Sony HDR-HC1.

I already figured that I can get slightly better quality if I convert HD files to SD NTSC interlaced inside VideoStudio instead of relying on HDR-HC1 to convert it in iLink SD mode.

I want to play DVDs on LCD TVs, computers and CRTs. What would happen if I 'Share/Custom' my HD files in SD NTSC 'FRAME BASED' instead of 'LOWER FIELD FIRST' and make a DVD from those?

Will Video Studio deinterlace my files in HD mode with line dubbing and down convert to SD (which would keep my vertical resolution 480) or it would do line deinterlacing with line dubbing in SD mode (which would half my vertical resolution)?

Will Video Studio let me create DVDs from these custom mpeg files or it will convert them back to interlaced?

Thank you
Gazso

My tests reveal there's no quality gain from down conversion of HD material.

At first, I also believed that myth.

But now I'm convinced it is a myth.

this ignorant here thinks that a camcorder, whatever its qualities, doing on-the-spot conversion of format while exporting, cannot cope with the quality you may expect from a high tech AMD or Intel processor with a large hard disk, lots of memory and all the time it wishes.

Except if the CPU is driven by a really bad program.
Is Ulead's production really bad? That's the real question.

If you down convert the video using the camera setting you will be alble to capture in the DV mode and use .AVI files. Capturing HD you will get MPG files and when down converted you will loose quailty. If you are editing a lot you will loose more quality.
