I don't know what is causing your problem, and you would need to tell us a lot more about the properties and source of the video, your work flow and computer set-up before anyone could venture a possible answer.

However, I hope you realise that you can set VS9 to auto-save your projects (File > Preferences > General, down towards the bottom of the tab). I normally set mine to every 5 minutes. That way, at least, you won't be losing hours of work every time the program crashes.

Hi Maso_Playboy, and welcome to the forums..:)

In order to help you we need more information. Please read the following :
  1. Read This First Sticky
  2. Recommended Procedures
Also please complete your system information in your profile. This will help us in troubleshooting your problems now, and in the future this information will already be available, so you will not have to re-type it.

One thing that I will mention at this time, is the possiblity of a bad RAM stick, or a hard drive going bad. Now before you reply with something like it's a new or almost new system, let me say that I had a RAM stick go bad. The symptoms were not that obvious when it first started. In fact VS was the only program that would crash. I finally decided to check it (thanks to some advice from this forum), when another program started to crash. Running a memory test I found one of mine to be bad. I was lucky in that the memory was still covered under warranty. I replaced it and no such crashes since.

Steve (sjj1805) had a new hard drive that was bad. I mean brand new, so it might be worth checking, as it does sound like that's what's happening.

Good tip Ken, if it works fault free. I have had a few Ulead programs fall over on me at times until I disabled the AutoSave function.

I'd rather think there is something wrong with the system. Since we know nothing about it because we have no info, there is nothing we can suggest.

OT, I followed one of your earlier hints and bought some stuff for a new PC I wanted to build at the local Computer Market. When I had it all together and wanted to install XP Pro on it I was unable to finish the installation. WIN kept telling me that the disk was faulty because certain files could not be copied to the installation folders.

After lengthy fault finding mission I tracked it down to a faulty stick of RAM, yet the Windows installer insisted it was a faulty disk 8)

Of course not  there are memory checking programs available on the web, just don't have a link handy just now.

Just got off my new machine that gave me a headache with that faulty memory stick. It does exactly what you are describing, just shuts down and restarts with no error message :? . Ran my Windows Memory checking program and guess what, the new stick of memory I bought is faulty as well, just not as fatal as the original one.

@ Ken
I guess I'm not a lucky person :? the first time after a long time, I took your advice and looked at the local computer market  Hasn't been a happy experience I can tell you.

In future I will stick to what I have been doing for a number of years now, get my stuff from a reputable retailer. Sure, I pay more, but at least I usually have something that works and if it doesn't I just go to the shop and replace it.

Good tip Ken, if it works fault free. I have had a few Ulead programs fall over on me at times until I disabled the AutoSave function.

And I'll just bet that if a user tries to burn from the timeline (against recommended procedure) with that function enabled...Video Studio will see it as an active project and as soon as it updates the burn will crash.

After a bit of googling, here are some links to memory checking programs.
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp and http://www.memtest86.com/

These are free and work well.

Not a sure thing.
I have autosave On since it was introduced, because, well you should know me... and never had a problem (not that I encode from timeline!);
the autosaved project is NOT the project you are working on, its another copy.
When VideoStudio has encountered an error and needs to close, that they are sorry for the inconvenience and that a log file has been created, you have the choice of opening the autosaved project, but you must not and your original project is still there in the state you last saved it manually.

It doesn't take much to trip Video Studio up though, Daniel. It's like playing hopscotch in a minefield.

True, although it's pretty stable since VS8 (yes, 8) on my machine under W2000. Maybe XP is buggy?.
On my machine, most errors are usually traced back to a mouse click.

I just wanted to point that the autosave is not especially seeing your project as active when it saves, it's just another project file, unrelated.

I just done the memory test
