Subtitles where there not suppose to be......

Post by DBRASCO »

I have a strange problem that is driving me nuts W/DVDMF4, after installation, if I play a DVD thru Windows media player 9,10 or 11 tried them all. I get subtitles on the screen even when they are off. If I check subtitles I get another set of subtitles under the ones that are on the screen so in short I have 2 subtitles going at the same time. when I uninstall DVDMF4 , media player act.s correctly. and I even tried a clean install of XP and only DVDMF4 w/all updates.

However if I use the DVDMF4 player I get no subtitles unless I check them, but the wife refuses to use that player she likes media player.....

Any help would get the wife off my back!

I don't really know the cause/solution, but I'll bet one of those is not subtitles but closed captions for the hearing impared. Look-up "closed captions" in Windows Media Player Help, to see how to turn them off. (Actually, WMP help claims you can't see them both at once... Hmmm... ) :?

Thanks I have already tried that as a solution, but media player shows closed caption is off.

But your probably right one is closed caption & the other subtitles. cause one shows up on the picture in bold yellow fonts, and when I turn subtitles on they show up below the screen in finer white text.

But when I remove DVDMF4 everything works fine. I install TBYB DVDMF5 and everything works correctly, but I just bought DVDMF4 less than 6 months ago. I'm not buying another.........

I will use roxio despite not liking the interface atleast it works.....W/media player.

Might sound stupid, but maybe you only tried MF4 or MF5, but not both...

Did you try installing MF4, and then adding MF5 trial (which will replace some files in "Common Files")?

If that works, now try removing MF5 (which will leave some of those newer files in place).

If it stops working after MF5 is uninstalled, reinstall MF5 but just use MF4. The files MF5 installs are not "trial", just the program itself.

Yes I have installed all updates. Still broke......

However Thanks to all of your responses. Installing DVDMF4 and all updates then TBYB5. restart and uninstalling TBYB5 everything is fixed......

I wanted to see what would happen so I uninstalled DVDMF4 again restarted then installed it again W/all updates. and you guessed it subtitles and closed caption are back.......however TBYB5 seems to patch something so I guess that is what I will do for now.

I can't figure out what is fixes, but my wife thanks you all. and a happy wife make me happy........ 8) 8) 8)

Thanks Guys.

I had a feeling that "trick" might work. But sometimes the reverse happens, like in my case (InterVideo AVControl bundled with MF5 breaks MPEG playback in MediaPlayer on my video system, but not on my notebook).

Anyway, Ulead software installation will install files shared by their products (example for English: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\), and if they are newer they will replace the old ones that are already present.

When you remove the newer product, the shared files still required by the remaining software will be kept. I guess you can call it an indirect update.
