I needed to convert 13 GB of DV to Mpeg-2 file. The result is perfect except it has a cracky sound. I checked twice - original DV file doesn't contain any cracky noises, but mpeg-2 does.
My configuration:
P-IV, 3 GHz
512 DDR-2 RAM
HDD - WD 160 Gb
--------------------
Did anybody face with the same problem? The sound isn't totally cracky, the problem arises only if the sound level changes rapidly.
I did defragmented both drives and cleaned up the register.

Artyom,
I assume you used version 10 to convert? The conversion process is all software, so a bad sound board is unlikely. So that would leave the audio property settings as possible culprits. What did you set as target audio properties for the mpeg2 file? Also, what are you using to playback the Mpeg file?

I'm glad that my system didn't know that at the time. I could have wasted a whole lot of money for a sound card I didn't need
Then again, fiddling around with all sorts of sound settings didn't do the trick.
I also did not talk about a bad soundcard but rather the lack of one
. The AC 97 on board sound is known to have a band width issue on the PCI bus and was certainly to blame in my case, as the results prove.

Re: Cracking sound at Mpeg-2
I've had a similar problem with the trial of Ulead VideoStudio 10...and it mainly seems to occur when converting from one format to another in some way. Over here, it mainifests itself as random ticks/pops in the audio. This has discouraged me from upgrading.artyom wrote:I needed to convert 13 GB of DV to Mpeg-2 file. I experienced this problem once - popping sound after rendered to mpeg. I subsequently burned it to DVD and the sound was perfect. Have you listened to the DVD or just the mpeg?

Just using the standard video available in the VS10+ Trial, I've also experienced this problem and I haven't a clue what's causing it! The audio tracks in clip mode are playing fine but as soon as I switch to the Project Mode to play the audio along with the video, it turns all crackly and popping sounds can be heard
On an unrelated topic...how does the surround sound mixer exactly work? I've put two tracks of audio on, and moved the necessary circles around to the back and front and they then move themselves when I move one channel and all stay in the same place in the "virtual room". Is this a problem or just a limitation of the trial....or is VS10+ picking up that I only have a 2.1 system connected to my computer?? Surely you can set the settings for a 5.1 system without having a similar system connected to your computer!? I am on the verge of purchasing this product as I hope to own a HDV camcorder sometime in the near future and I believe that the surround sound will be a valued feature for myself, I'm just a little confused as to how it works (upgrading from VS8)
Sorry to blabber on.
