Need to capture old VHS into VS9

Post by tommytucker »

copy protected, does anyone recommend a product or software to allow me to copy old VHS material onto my DVD for archiving?

Yes - Ulead VideoStudio is the software - but you will also need some kind of hardware (external 'black-box', analogue capture card , etc. ) - do you have anything like that ?

No, I do not have anything like that

although I have seen some ads for those, like DVD Red Pro. I am not Captain Jack the pirate, but would like to archive some old VHS. Any recommendation on that would be great. Also, I am using VS9. Due to the fact I would like to have a better photo image tool than Picasa, etc for photo managment and enhancement, I am comptemplating the bundle VS10+ with Photoimpact 11 deal on Ulead. Is it worth upgrading to VS10+, even if I don't have a high def cam or TV?

Do you have a digital camcorder with AV-In port? If yes, chances are that you can hook it up to your VCR on the AV-In side and fire wire (iLink, IEEE1394) to your PC for capture.

If your VHS tapes are copy protected, you might still not be able to copy these :?

I would say yes it is worth it. I currently have VS10+, and PI-11, and Picasa 2. Picasa is a nice free management program, but that's about it. If you are wanting to do some serious photo editing, plus a little more then I thing the current bundle would be worth it to you.

Thanks for the advice

Yes, I have a digital JVC vidcam that allows me to hook it up as a passthrough from VCR to firewire. That works great. Won't deal with copyguard though.
I also appreciate the kudos for VS10+, so I guess I will be pulling out my wallet. Only concern is it took me some time to learn about how to get the smart download content that you have to manually find on the board and download, smartdownload never worked right, and I hope I don't miss any of the freebies that should come with VS10+.

I would also recommend to purchase the full box version. You will not have to worry about smartdownload, as everything is on the CDs.
