Movie Factory 4: Files Appearing Bigger Than They Are

Post by Brush »

When I try to burn an AVI file to a DVD it is showing as being much larger than it actually is. For example one file is only 390MB but when I add it to burn onto a DVD, Movie Factory 4 is showing it as needing 5.77GB of space. This doesn't happen with all AVI files, some show as being the correct size, others are grossly inflated.

I'm just trying to burn to normal TDK 4.7GB DVD+RW's and have never had any problems before.

Can anyone help?

The file size is determied by two things... Bitrate and playing time. DVDs are MPEG-2, and they can have bitrates in the ballpark of 2000kbps to 9000kbps. (Higher bitrate = higher quality.) At 6000 kbps with Dolby audio, you can fit about 90 minutes onto a single-layer DVD. If your program is longer than 90 minutes, you need to use a lower bitrate.

Here's a Bitrate Calculator[/b[]/u]

An AVI file is a container file, and it can contain a file with any compression format. That's why some of your AVI files are huge, and some are small. I'd guess that your original 390MB file is in a highly compressed format... AVI/DivX???

Thanks for the reply. My files were in highly compressed DivX formats and I've read in other discussions that a lot of people have trouble burning AVI files to DVD. I have since installed a program called VOS ConvertX To DVD which works brilliantly and has converted and burned all my AVI files with no problems.

For the files that were too big to burn to DVD, I've had to bite the bullet and watch them on my PC. Unfortunately the quality is always rubbish compared to watching on my TV. When I use full screen mode, no matter what player I use (Media Player, WinDVD) the picture is very blocky and it doesn't play smoothly. It keeps freezing and the audio doesn't synch up correctly. My PC is a relatively decent one and has lots of RAM, a good graphics card and a reasonable processor so I can't understand why playback is so poor.

Ah well at least I've found a workaround.
