inserting video into the middle of a project

Post by stannmaple »

Hi. I'm still learning this stuff, but have successfully done a couple of small projects. I was wondering though, is there a way to insert video clips into the MIDDLE of a project WITHOUT dissrupting the placement of titles and audio overlays? What I want is for the audio overlays and titles to still line up with the video AFTER it gets pushed over from inserting a clip. How do I do this? Thanks

Hi Dan

Its called the ‘Ripple Editing’ If you are using vs 9 or 10.

Activating the ripple effect locks the timelines so that when the main timeline is changed all clips upstream are moved. Not used it that much myself, there are limitations.

Press F1 for help and search for ‘ripple editing’

ok, I thought ripple editing just meant if I deleted a clip, the following clip wouldn't just bump up against it, it would leave a big gap. I guess I need to re-read the information on it. Thanks.

Yeah, it didn't seem to make any difference whether I enabled or disabled ripple editing. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I don't even see what ripple editing is suppose to do... it seems to edit exactly the same whether it's on or off. Is there a different way to group the titles, audio overlays and videos so they all move together without saving it as a video (which would eliminate the possibility of editing the existing tracks.) If anyone else has done this, please let me know. Thanks again for all the help!

Hi

When you edit / remove a section from the main timeline all clips to the right of the edit shuffle left to close the gap, This is normal as you cannot have gaps in the video timeline.
The clips in the other timelines, titles / audio / overlay etc will remain where they are. This creates an out of sync’ in relation to the main timeline.

When you activate Ripple Editing you can use the chain icons to the left to link individual timelines.

Once this is done any edit to the main video timeline will close the gap again but the ripple effect will drag the other timelines to keep them in the correct place with respect to the main timeline.

If that makes sense.

Remember it only works to clips to the right of the edit

It does make sense, but I must be doing something wrong. None of my tracks move together whether or not I have ripple editing enabled....

hi

Make sure you are selecting the 'chain link' icon to the left of the timelines.

right. That's what I did. I clicked the icon to the left of the timeline. If I hover over it, it says "enable/disable ripple editing. It doesn't seem to make any difference...
