Chapter points - how stored? In text file or in mpg stream?

Post by jlietz »

Hi,

Since the MSP trial has the export to DVD function disabled :( can someone tell me how the chapter points are communicated to DVD Workshop 2? Is it in a separate text file? Or is the info included in the stream? And does anyone know of any other editing apps that allow chapter cues or something like it that Workshop would recognize?

Thanks

It must be in the video file, whether it be in avi or mpg. I don't know of any other NLE but surmise that VS may. There may be others.

Ok, but wouldn't that require a re-encode? For example, if I feed a compliant MPEG-2 video into MSP8 and set chapter cues, and if it will put that info in the video file, it seems to me like it would require a reencoding of the MPEG-2 file, which would be very undesirable from my point of view. Both because of the additional time required and for the potential quality loss when reencoding MPEG-2 video.

I wish Ulead wouldn't have disabled the "export to Workshop" feature in the trial, because I could easily test this myself :( But I don't think I want to pay $300 just to find out. Anyone want to test this out for me with a compliant MPEG-2 video?

Thanks.

1) You dont need export to dvd. Just use create video file.
2) As far as I know, the chapter points are stored by msp8 in a separate file (for mpeg). But this file is binary and the format not documented. It is allways created together with the mpeg file.

I think I do need the "export to" functionality since the main draw for me to using Workshop to author is that it will not re-encode compliant MPEG-2 video. If I use the "create video file" function in MSP I won't really know if MSP is re-encoding or just rendering a new file.

I never used export to dvd. As descriped on page 161 of the msp8 manual, you should yous file: create - video file. This file you can later export for use by moviefactory. I dont know if it is also possible to export to dws2, but I never saw any benefit, since I can import the files in dws2.
In dws2 you can avoid to reencode compliant files by setting an option. If you have just one compliant file, then you wont need msp8, you can import it directly in dws2.

I want to use MSP 8 to set chapter points though. The scrubbing, scrolling, etc., functionality of Workshop is exceptionally poor, or else I'd just set the chapter points in there.
