Help with importing DVD-VR (VRO) files...

Post by komari »

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Samsung R130 DVD Recorder. I have been recording some soccer games in VR mode since I sometimes have to edit the file if the game is shorter than the time set to record (ie. no extra time). I figured I should be able to import the files into UVS10 and create chapters and menus, then make a DVD-V disk for universal playback.

So here is my problem - I made two DVD-VR disks (on 4x TDK DVD-RW media) both with two games recorded. When I try and play the disk on the computer using Win DVD only the first recorded game is recognized (program lists one title with one chapter). When I use UVS to import the file, Video Studio sees that there are two programs, but it can only read the first one. If I try to click on the second program/title I get an unspecified error (or sometimes it says it cannot read the disk). I read somewhere online that you can try copying the VRO file onto the HD and then rename it as an mpeg (.mpg), but that doesn't work either as Windows gets stuck at around 50% and reports a read error!

I have read the importing DVD tutorial, but it deals with regular DVD-V formatted disks with Video_TS folders. I have called Samsung twice and they don't have any help with my problem and so I'm hoping someone here may have some suggestions. I have tried to transfer on two different computers but get the same errors.

You help is greatly appreciated...thanks.

Hi maddrummer - thanks for your reply.

Yes, both disks with the games finalized on the DVD recorder prior to transfering the files on the comp.

I did some more testing last night and it looks like it is a Samsung formatting issue. If I record a single track in DVD-VR mode, then I can easly drag the VRO file off the DVD-RW and onto the computer. I have also tried moving files from Video_TS folders created by the recorder and that works fine.

As one of the Samsung reps had said - manufacturers implement their writing/formatting protocols slightly differently and that might be the issue. However, I don't have another DVD-recorder to play with which would help determine whether it's a Samsung or universal problems with multi-track DVD-VR disks.

I will try transfer the multi-track VRO file on Monday on the computer at work before giving up. It has a Samsung DVD-Rom and I might be able to pull the entire VRO file!

Hi MD

I did not concider the 2 gig limit to be an issue because: 1) using NTFS and not FAT32 on WinXP-SP2, and 2) able to tranfer a couple of VRO files larger than 3 gig without any problems (but they only had a single title on them!).

I'm beginning to think that it is my DVD reader as you suggested. I was able to tranfer one of the VRO files with two titles on the work computer - but there is no VS or MF to test whether it was good for editing/splitting (no reason to think that it would not be).

So I'll try your suggestion to try multiple small titles on a VR disk which would confirm a DVD-drive problem. I guess it might be time to upgrade my DVD-burner in any case, still working with a single layer 8x drive which means I have to keep sample rates low to fit stuff onto disks!

Thanks for all your input...

MD,

Since I'm a bit behind with the DVD-burners technology - by tripple format you mean DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW and DVD-Ram?
