MSP8 is Rubbish!!!!!!!!
I would just like to say a big thanks to primekid for expresing how most of us ulead consumers actually feel.
I'm glad I posted what i did and the "Ivory Tower" posters (as they will now be known) were quick to be-little me, and one of them (gra i think) actually implied I go away and this forum should only be used for the more technically minded to share techniques & tips from those with a higher understanding of the product........ I just want it to work..!!!!
Gra's quote: "Keep this board for those with honest technical questions and observations or for the more expert amongst us to share tips 'n' tricks is what I say!!!"

I've kept out of this phase of the debate up to now, but this has now gone too far.
I should like to know what data you have that makes you think that "most of us ulead consumers" feel as you say. I do need substantiation that, among the tens of thousands of users, world wide, at least half of them are dissatisfied with the Ulead products they have. Unless you can provide this, your sweeping statement is entirely valueless.
What peeves me even more is that you posted a complaint, to which I replied, making a suggestion as to how to overcome your problem. I was gratified when you came back to say that my suggestion did the trick and make your MSP8 usable and stable. I was pleased to have been able to help you. Then, after having helped you, you turn around and stab others and myself in the back by implying a) that Ulead products (have you tried them all?) were of poor quality and b) that the Ulead forums offer no practical help to newbies, only to those who already know how to drive the software.
I consider this behaviour as unseemly, to say the least. As for Primekid's rant (and it is a rant), I purposely ignored it. Others have pointed out that he refuses to be helped, so his rant becomes totally meaningless. We can help only those who wish to help us help themselves. He is entitled to his opinion and to share it (if he had posted something similar on the Pinnacle forum, it would have been deleted illico presto). Does it not tell you something that the Ulead Admin does not delete anti-Ulead posts?
OK, allow me to come down from my Ivory Tower and tell you my MO. I read everything posted on this and the DVD WS boards. I reply, as a general rule, only to posts where I feel I have something useful to say and no one else has responded in the meantime. Certainly, I try to keep my posts short, to have been accused of terseness on a number of occasions, but no one pays me for the time I spend on the forum. I am just a satisfied user of various Ulead softwares, as I hope that you are, but with many years' experience with them. I try to be helpful, that's all. And, if you care to look through my posts, you will find I have been very uncomplimentary about some aspects or features of Ulead products from time to time, but only when I feel that such criticism is fully justified - as it sometimes is. If I can help anyone, I'm happy, but I become very unhappy when you, or anyone else, is helped and then turns around and stabs me in the back.
Capisce?

The jist of all this is:
I for one have used ulead for 5-6 years starting from the bottom and working up to a "PRO" user. I, like many others were more than happy and delighted with MSP7 and never ever had a problem using that software (I had a PC custom made just to run the sofware at the recomended spec)
I did the same for MSP8 and find I have to check into a support forum every week to get help and advice on how to get it to work proprley.
Like I have also mentioned I am just an average guy with an average pc intelligence, and half of the advice and hocus pocus that is mentioned in here go's over my head so I end up doing nothing for fear of damaging my pc.

So why don't you simply reply "I didn't quite grasp what you mean by.... could you perhaps elaborate a little or explain it differently"Video_guy wrote:....Like I have also mentioned I am just an average guy with an average pc intelligence, and half of the advice and hocus pocus that is mentioned in here go's over my head so I end up doing nothing for fear of damaging my pc.....
I am sure that the members of this board who took the time and effort to try and assist you or another user would be more than happy to try and explain a point further.
If someone has responded to a request for help, the responder is not trying to show off with how knowledgeable they are, they are trying to assist a fellow user overcome a problem. If you didn't understand the answer - ASK - I am sure the responder would then try and clarify your difficulty further.
It does not do morale good to bite off the hand that feeds you.
Devil Heinz-oz, Gra and several other users here who try and provide answers to problems are not paid, not employed by Ulead and are customers of Ulead products just like yourself. We should all be gratefull for the time and effort they put into the assistance they provide to fellow Forum Members who come here seeking help.

Can you feel the love in the room?
Just my 2 cents worth.
I am an average pc guy.... and I know enough to admit when someone is talking over my head... that's got a name. It's called learning.
That said... MSP is like every other edit suite out there. It will work perfect on some machines with no special work whatsoever. It will kinda work on some machines if you are willing to play with it some... and it will simply not work on some configurations of pcs and software no matter what you do.
Do not blame the product for A: your machines configuration or B: your inability to understand what is required to make it right. Instead be the professional editor you say you are and put in the time and mind sweat to get it working the way you want it to.
A pro makes mistakes.. learns from them.. and moves on. The better for it.
These boards rock.. and the folks here who try every day to help people they have never met are true professionals IMHO.

I've been using MSP since v6. I've found it GREAT! I've found this board GREAT! I've found Charlie Hills 'Getting Results with MSP GREAT!
Sure! I've had problems trying to edit, we all do. It all get's down to attitude. Stop playing the 'blame game'. Blaming Ulead, your computer, other forum members, or anybody else who gets in the way. My mother always used to say "It's a poor workman who blames his tools". Take a calm approach, get back to the drawing board and hang in there.

Get real, roll up your sleeves and do something. Who knows, you might get an almighty surprise and actually get it to work. After all, thousands have.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself and blame others for your misery.
Ok Heinz
Could you please give me the basic set up config, the minimum system hardware, the tweaks and changes i need to make to my pc to get it to work, oh, could you all please stop making feel like a retard.
I have my sleaves rolled up and ready to listen to your advice on how to get it to run on my system which is:
Windows XP Home Edition.
1 x 100 gig hd
1 x 250 gig hd
ATI Radeon Pro 9600 Graffix card
Duel Intel P4 Processor with hyper threading technology
2 gig ram
msp8 (only software installed)
No Internet Conection
Nothing Running in Background.
Recently done clean install of windows and msp8 as devils instuctions all fine untill today.
MSP8 has crashed three times this morning editing a 5 minit video clip with two transitions, three title clips, and auto music added.
and you chastise and be-little me when i dare to say msp8 is rubbish!!!!!!

Nobody is chastising you and there is only one person here that makes yourself feel belittled, You!.
For your system to be unable to work, something else must be wrong. Did you check your memory with a memory checking program?
Have you run a disc check?
Don't start again and acuse us of belittling you, MSP 8 works for so many users that it can't be that bad. If it was, we would not be able to say anything here.
I have just built a new system and was unable to install Win XP. The system told me the disc was faulty. Some files were corrupted during the installation and the f**king thing wouldn't start. I knew for a fact that the disc was ok but, to be on the safe side, I installed XP on a new HDD on a different system, no problem at all. So, it wasn't the installation disk. To cut a long story short, it turned out that my newly bought memory was faulty. Replaced it and all was well.
Next problem I got was my system restarting every now and then and once in a while my FireFox browser encountered a problem and needed to shut down. I was invited to send an error report to Microsoft.
Sounds familiar? Today, I replaced the replacement memory stick again (I tested it with Win Memory checker, faulty again). Since then, 3 1/2 hours now, the system works fine and I'm doing three things at once.
Let us now how the test comes out.

VIDEO_GUY:
First, let me say that I am not experiencing crashes at all... that's not so say that this is all in your head!! But the point is that something is obviously different.
First, are you sure it's actually crashing? Sorry... not calling you stupid, but there are a few times where I thought I had frozen and crashsd. There was actually a "not responding" notice at the top. The first few times this happened I would kill msp through task manager and start again. But then one time I just let it sit and it came back to me about 5 minutes later. It was obviously busy do something in the background, and I was rushing it. I find this is great for happening with the auto music.
Second, are you using Proxy? I find that this tends to slow things down incredibly (alot of background stuff happening and IMO, msp tends to be a little weak when it comes dealing with background work)
Speaking of background stuff... I'm sure you checked this already, but do you have any background programs running while msp is up? This includes things like auto updates... I have them ALL turned off... even windows... ANYTHING that could start up in the back ground and screw up your day should be turned off. Things like DISKEEPER LIGHT.. default in the auto load and run mode when you install... go through your services and make sure only the necessary things are in the auto start mode... turn everything else to manual
Are you sure that your original clip is in good standing... there is nothing wrong with it?
Is the DMA enabled on your harddrives?
Are you choosing the proper template given the properties of the clip?
Go through your windows EVENT list and see if there are any errors that are being picked up and logged.
That's it for now... If I can think of anything else to bug you about... I'll be back!

One of the first things I did after installing is to change some "preferences" items.
Levels Undo (I lowered to 3)
Auto Save (set it to 60 minutes -- and as part of my work, I periodically hit the save button myself)
Number of Backups (I set it to 5)
Temp Folder - I put it on a separate non-system drive
I don't know if these will help your situation.
Keep in mind that when it is doing an "Auto Save", it can "appear" that the program has "locked up" as neonbob mentioned (which I believe is an issue -- it should be transparent to the user).
Also, what type of video files are you working with? Can you list their properties (I apologize if you have already done so earlier in this thread -- I am jumping in kind of late).
Regards,
George

Hi Again,
I Just noticed this comment on another forum (posted today):

I Just noticed this comment on another forum (posted today):
Regards,With regards the restarting and crashing I had similar problems with rendering mpegs in both MSP 7 and 8. Tried all sorts and then some one suggested testing memory. Lo and behold I had a lot of random problems with my memory. Seems the dimm`s I used were over rated speed wise either by the manufacturer or supplier. Said 400 on the label but were actualy 330. Set them slower in bios and all my problems disappeared. Just a thought.

No all computers have this feature but many (read your computer manual) in the bootup process have a HotKey to hit that launches a special partition of the harddisk for diagnostics. You can check all the hardware in the computer using the diagnostics tools.
The hardest thing is running software on a non-certified windows machine (commonly called a turn-key system).
Windows itself is an "All Or None" operating system. That's why we have to continuously reboot and reload everything.
I notice this person is running a ATI 9600 video card. Some of ATI's drivers are nortoriously incompatible with certain hardware/software setups.
Take a look at a highend system from the link below. Only one choice of a video card which is NVidia. You can take this same system and install an ATI card into it and make it work. But, then that would be the same as running a non_turnkey windows system. The link below is for a PowerMac G5, but my point is that these systems are hardware certified.
The majority of forum posts on windows systems running audio/video software is hardware related issues. Bad or not 100% compatible hardware eventually causes software to fail.

Hope this helps. When I build a new comp or reformat a drive to make an old one clean again.. I have learned there is an order to the madness.
First make sure you got all your stuff ready. Then install windows xp. Then Install any motherboard drivers that came on disk. Then install all the hardware drivers. One at a time. Video card drivers. Sound card drivers. Then wireless internet drivers etc. Reboot after each install. Then upgrade the XP to the latest service pack. Right now its sp2. Then make sure you have no conflicts. If your mboard has an on board sound card make sure it is disabled in bios if you are using an add on sound card. Then install any programs you want... making certain that the video editing software is installed last. That way no other program or driver overrides the settings the video editing program is designed to work within.
Then install any upgrades to the video editing software.
One more note... MSP is much happier if you have the program on one drive and the video files and temp files on another. So if your boot drive is "C" that is where your programs are prolly installed. I would get another drive and add it in while you are going through all these reinstalls. It really will help.
Hope aome/any of this helps.
