MSP8 interaction crashes

Post by Devil »

My video computer recently became unstable and I was getting crashes in MSP8.1 for no apparent reason. I did a repair installation: no improvement. I did a repair installation of WinXP: worse, got the "A Registry Error" message. To make sure, I reinstalled the graphics drivers (Matrox G-550); that cured a different problem but did not help MSP8. Did a total uninstall of MSP8, removed all the MSP8 files from Documents and Settings\..., removed all references to MSP8 in the registry (found there were tens of duplicate keys, possibly because each beta build added one). Reinstalled MSP8 and the 8.1 update. It now appears (touch wood) stable, again.

If anyone is having consistent crashes, after trying the usual things like switching off resident applications (firewall, anti-virus etc.), I suggest a repair install of Windows (you don't lose functionality with a repair, which they call upgrade, unlike a full installation, and you can keep updates), a full re-installation of the graphics drivers (in case) and a full uninstall/reinstall of MSP8, as described above.

Hardware profile did the trick for me...

I had a similar sort of problem (frequent crashes) but couldn't be bothered with uninstalls, reinstalls, repair installs etc. I found a different thread suggesting a separate hardware profile for video editing. It worked a treat and didn't take long to set up.
