Hi

After upgrading my ram from 512Mb to 1Gb there was a noticeable improvement in the response times of video studio.
I do not seem to have much of a problem with instant playback unless I have a lot of clips in the various timelines.

Using the Album transitions were particularly bad to the extent that I did not use them.
Using the various filters also contributes to the problem, some much more than others.

Basically everything you add to the timelines puts strain on instant playback, its then up to how good your pc is.

Adding clips to the libraries could take some time to load, but with 1Gb is much improved

Preview Folder.
Afaik this is used when viewing in High Quality Playback only. Instant Playback does not use the preview folder.
The project is rendered to temporary files saved to the preview folder. (File-Preferences-Preview)
This can take some time to render but the playback should be excellent, (as good as playing a single clip) again depending on your pc spec’
Each time you change/add content the playback will render the changes before playing. (which is a bit annoying, but thats how it used to work a long time ago)
The preview folder can also be accessed via Tools-Preview Files manager.

After rendering if you save the project the preview files will be saved, but if you close without saving the files will be removed.

Fill in your profile to include your pc info.

Thanks alot for your detailed response, i think i'll definately take the bull byt the horns and get myself a ram upgrade, as i normally work with alot of clips so performance is an issue.

I have no need for the software.
VS & MF still run well.
Yes I also remove everything Audio from VS8, VS9 and VS10 and it works very well. Also the three are resident and working on the same machine. The VS8/VS9 projects import gracefully into VS10.

Besides adding memory, my VS always showed improved behaviour after defragmenting the working drive (I must stress, with plenty of overall free space to begin with). Preferably do not use the same physical drive for VS working disk and Windows swap file.

Preview performance is affected by the video card. I don't have a clue why, but have nearly identical machines with one mainstream (6600GT) and one Very anemic video and the difference is really sensible in Instant playback.
