possible to run VS8 and VS10+ on same pc?

Post by SP »

Due to a few 'problems' i'm having with my newly purchased VS10+ I'm thinking of reinstalling VS8 - is it possible to have both installed on one system without any problems?

Yes, but I would add them in sequence....VS8 first and then VS10 plus. I'm amazed that you were happy with VS8. I found it to be very buggy.

I'm amazed too - in respect that i was really looking forward to working with the new VS10+ but it's been a real let down so far, VS8 seemed alot more reliable. I'm suffering major lag with my project previews which is promting me to re-install VS8 so i can edit without this problem.

A quick question - can you import VS8 projects into VS10+?

Quick answer: No.

With VS10+ you are supposed to have backward compatability to VS9. Still since there are so many changes made to each version, it is risky to try an older project in a newer version.

I agree with Terry, that VS8 was real buggy. However this is the strangest part, I could apply album tranistions in VS8 without problems, in VS9 and VS10+ it slows down my system so much that they are not worth it to me.

***EDIT***

I am currently running 3 versions of VS and 2 versions of MSP on my system without any problems.

Do you think my extreme lag time when previewing a project in VS10+ has to do with my large amount of transitions then? (Even though the majority of them are only set to 1 second or below)

I don't know what your large amount is, however yes that would cause the Preview to be jerky, seem to hang up and not show all of your project as it will be. Previewing a project is a very rough estimate of how the finished product will be. VS has to throw all of this together on the fly, so unless you have a real powerhouse for a computer this is what happens.

Try using the Preview Range, to preview short segments. I use it when I have complex projects.

I just opened VS8 and threw some DV clips with image overlays, titles, and a couple of transitions to check the preview playback. It did ok, but still started to stutter. Mind you I only had 1 DV clip, with a couple color clips, 3 transitions, and 2 images. So it will do the same as VS10 +..

Thanks for your quick response, i've probably got around 30 - 40 short clips of around 5 seconds each with a small transition between all of them,
i'll try using the preview range instead and see if i can get more joy from that.

I am having an extreme lag time (also had it with v8 & v9), but mine is due to using SmartSound. Are you using any in your project? My remedy is to create a .wav file of the selection I want (after I am absolutely, positively sure of it's length - or else I have to do it over) and insert that instead of the original SmartSound file. Once I do that I have no lag time.

It may help if you can set/assign the preview directory to another physical drive on your system. "Preferences" (F6 key).
I managed to change the preferences and assign the preview to my external HD (H Drive) but it seems that VS was quickly placing it back to the defaults.

With the preferences changed to another drive - does VS leave any physical trace of it's workings, such as temp files, as i checked out the designated folder on my external drive after several previews and it was empty.

And no, i don't use the smart sound options in my projects - is it worth keeping this installed?

The external drive may be the issue with your lag time. Are you using a Firewire or USB? There have been some issues when using an external drive while editing video. Some people have had no problems with them, and others tend to have alot. Since you have your Working and Preview set this drive, I suspect that VS is behaving normally by resetting it. It may loose communication to it, so resorts back to the default, which is generally the Windows/Temp folder.

There shouldn't be any reason to uninstall Smartsound, in fact I haven't tried running VS without them. I don't know if it would improve or cause VS to throw fits if they are not installed. :?

Many thanks for all your comments, guess i'll just have to keep pulluing my hair out over this bad lag time and resort to switching back to VS8!

I have no need for the software.
VS & MF still run well.
Thanks MD, I never knew that. Of course I do use them, but was curious if they would balk..:)

Well, i went back to VS10+ and tried my project in the instant preview without my extensive amount of transitions, the result was a little better but still proved to be catching and stalling on almost every other video frame. Perhaps it's in my best interest to upgrade to 1gb of Ram.
