MSP8.1, repeated crashes on mpg render
Video editing software repeatedly crashes when ever I render a mpg file. The application shuts down. Truth is, MSP 8.1, Adobe Premiere Elements 2, Memories on TV, etc. crashes on rendering a mpg. Rendering as an avi okay.
Same software load, MSP 8.1, Adobe Premiere Elements 2, Memories on TV, etc. works fine my other machines.
System info:
Pro-Star notebook, 8794
Dual intel 3.4 Ghz extreme edition
256 Mb ati video card
2 Gb Ram PC3200 DDR 2x1Gb
Windows XP Pro, SP2

You have answered your question yourself. Your notebook is not set up suitably. I suspect the problem may be one related to the HDD. Have you split it into partitions? If so, how? Where have you set the temp files?
Then, you may need to ensure that you have nothing running in the background (firewall, anti-virus etc.).

Thanks for the reply Devil.
I agree that the problem is in the setup of the Pro-Star notebook but I'm at a loss as to what the problem is.
There are 2 HHD's.
C - System 100 Gb not partitioned
D - Open 60 Gb not partitioned
The temp file listed under preferences of MSP8 is
C:\Documents and settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp
I'll try again with background tasks turned off but background tasks have not been an issue with other systems.
Your thoughts? Any help with the set up would be greatly appreciated.

Just an idea:
Rendering takes often a long time. Assuming that you wait meanwhile, you wont enter keys nor are you moving the mouse. So some powersaving options might get active on your notepad, switching of part of the hardware. (E.g. screensaver.) I often saw this causing hangs and other problems.
To exclude this possibliity switch of power saving both in bios and in windows.

THoff
Other things worth looking into are the possibility that the processor is overheating (after all you are in Savannah), or that the processor or memory are pushed too far.
You could download Motherboard Monitor or a similar program to see if it will pick up the processor and motherboard temperature. As a test, I would try to deliberately underclock your system by a good amount (10 to 20% or so) to see if it will survive a length rendering session, and then see from there.

Thanks THoff,
Do you have a suggested motherboard monitor program? "Motherboard Monitor 5.3.7.0" (MBM5) seems to be the most popular. My motherboard, Clevo, is not listed however within MBM5. I was told the motherboard was Clevo. How do you determine the motherboard manufacturer & part number anyway?
How would I determine if my system, processor & memory, is over or under clocked?

Thanks again Devil,
The tread you referenced indicates 3 basic steps
1. Repair installation of Windows.
Not sure how to accomplish this. Do I reinstall sp2?
2. Latest video driver. Already accomplished, the latest on the Pro-Star (notebook manufacturers) web site. I've been told this is best as opposed to installing the latest driver on the ATI web site.
3. Already done but will redo after 1. & 2. above
Your thoughts on windows repair installation & the video driver?

Start as for a fresh install but choose upgrade, rather than a clean install.
As for the graphics drivers, those that are "tweaked" by the motherboard makers will not necessarily be better or more reliable than those produced by the graphics chipset maker. I've seen this twice.

Devil,
1. Tried a repair XP install, registry mechanic, video card (from ATI) driver/software, registry mechanic again, & re-installation.
No improvement
2. Tried a full re-installation of XP, SP2, all available updates from MS, registry mechanic, card (from ATI) driver/software, registry mechanic again, re-installation.
No improvement
The software will crash just
Totally bummed!
I understand & agree that the issue is with the notebook as I've had very good luck on 2 other systems.
The system I'm having trouble with is a killer notebook that I have an opportunity to purchase. I trust the person that currently owns it. He regularly updates to the latest notebook, He a heavy user of 3D studio. The good side is that I haven't bought a system that won't work with my video editing software. Other software seems to work fine, but most other software, MS Office, photo editing, etc. doesn't tax the system that way video editing does.
Any other ideas? I would like to buy this notebook but...

In that case, I'd find a different make of notebook.
