New problem: Can't record through VideoStudio 8.

Post by res »

I installed Hauppage WinTV-PVR-250 this morning to record from analogue camcorder. (system is P4-3000, 1 Meg Ram, lots of disk space). I recorded previously through Osprey 100 capture board - quality was poor but it worked (both video and audio). Now VideoStudio 8 tells me - "Capture module initiate failed, Cannot preview". Closing out that error message, I can see that the Source is set to "Hauppage WinTV PVR PCI 11 Capture".
Setting Format to DVD (or anything else) brings the message "Can not select capture format what [sic] you want. An error occured while checking the support format."

Video encoder is set to DVD Stream, output 720 X 480, variable bitrate etc.

Any bright ideas on what might be the problem?

I can record excellent Mpeg-2video through WinTV, but can't capture audio through that system, although I hear it while recording. It seems I can't win for losing....

The first thing I would suggest is going to their site and getting the latest drivers and software for it.

Next I would use the software that came with it for capturing? Import the captured footage into VS8.

Yes, Use the PVR-2000 software that came with your Hauppauge card for capturing.

As far as I can tell, Video Studio can't capture the already-hardware-encoded MPEG.

I've had my Hauppauge card for a few months... and I do seem to remember having problems with audio too... but crap! I don't remember for sure... It's working great now... maybe I plugged the audio into my soundcard first. (?) Take a look at the Windows mixer... both recording and playback.

I hope you are trying-out the free trial version of Video Studio, because I've had problems with the audio & video getting out of sync after editing MPEG files with Video Studio.

This problem only occurs with the DVD. The edited MPEG file plays fine with Windows Media Player. When I used unedited (Hauppauge captured) MPEG files, I had no problems.

According to their site, Version 2.2, which came with the card, is the latest version.

That seems to be how it must be done.

Yes. I first plugged the audio into the sound card. The audio sounded fine as I monitored and recorded a clip. But when I played it back, the video was good but no audio had been recorded. Next I plugged the audio into the WinTV audio Line-in socket. No audio could be heard and none was recorded. I checked the Audio Troubleshooting section and ensured that the Audio Mixer Input was set to Wave, the Wave setting was not muted and the level was set high. I don't know where to look next.

That seems to be right. Must capture through the Hauppauge software.

I don't know where to look for the Windows Mixer, but i'll try to find it.

No such luck. I hope I don't have those problems. But first I'll be happy to get any audio at all....

Check the audio configuration on your sound card. You may need to enable the WAV in recording or adjust the volume.

That's my siganture set in my profile it gets attached to every post. :D For harware specific issues no it's not very useful unless your using a ATI AIW but it has much to offer for the novice. Suggest you read it from end to end. I have a few times, it will give you basic grasp of the technical aspects of video.

If it still doesn't work go to www.videhelp.com . Do search first you'll probably find the answer, if not post it. There's literally hundreds of people there that use that card. You'll probably get a rsponse in minutes.

FYI there's a quote button in the uuper left of all posts, yo quote someone click hit it. Lot easier than cop/paste.

In case anyone's curious about the outcome, I concluded the Hauppauge card was faulty, returned it to the store and went out and bought an MSI TV@nywhere Master board. Now capturing excellent quality video and audio with it through VideoStudio 8. I appreciate the interest and help in working through my problem. Just posted a new question on making copies of a DVD disk....

Hi res;

I have the MYHD high definition tuner card which I use for capturing mpeg2 HD and SD TV broadcasts, I have found that if I use windows millennium I have no problem recording both audio and video mpeg2 at all.

No matter what I have tried I have not been able to record mpeg2 with windows XP.

I use MYHD as the capture driver in Video Studio 8 and I use the (mpeg 2 now) software driver that comes with Video Studio for mpeg2 capture. With this combination it is not necessary to set any parameters for Video or Audio in the software that comes with my MYHD tuner card. This all done in Video Studio 8. The only thing I need to do with the MYHD tuner card is make sure that MYHD is runing and that MYHD is tuned into the TV programing I want to capture.

Video Studio 8 can be confusing with the first servral attempts at setting up. But with patients and determination I have been able to capture MPEG2 High Definition TV broadcast's with great success and looks fantstic.

I do all my mpeg2 capture useing Windows Millenium.

Hi Robert,
I agree that VideoStudio 8 can be confusing, especially for a beginner. Ulead doesn't provide useful instructions other than some over-simplified tutorials. There isn't even a helpful book available. I did find and order a CD-Rom, "getting results with VideoStudio 8" by Charlie Hills, which in fact came in today's mail, so I'm hopeful that it will be useful. I haven't had time to even open the package yet.

I don't have the MYHD card and it would be a fairly big investment for my purpose which is capturing home videos from my camcorder. I rarely watch TV so that isn't my purpose. The MSI TV@nywhere card, capturing MPEG2 through VideoStudio 8 (in Win XP) is giving me results that at least to me as a beginner, look and sound excellent. ...ray
