VS7 slow response

Post by fibersport »

I've started editing again after awhile and noticed that when editing a video captured via an ADS unit, it takes a very long time to scroll through the video when in edit mode. I have an AMD 2200 (1800 mhz) with 512 mb of ram, and an MSI video card with 64mb of ram.

Right now to move even one frame takes one minute and 35 seconds. Once I render the video, there is no problem. CPU usage is low, around 10 - 15%, but page file usage is around 599 mb.

Should I have a separate formatted file location for the video? Inititially the file was around 8 Gb but I cut it in half to fit on an hour long DVD.

Also, I have a SONY dual layer DVD. Is there a way to fit the full 8+ Gb on a dual layer disc or is this something that version 7 won't do. If I can make it work any suggestions how and if not then will a newer version allow this?

I know, many questions but I'm trying to transfer a bunch of tapes (8mm) to DVD before our vacation to keep the kids quite while driving. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg aka Fibersport

It would help if you told us what format the file is in, and its other properties. (I am assuming that it is mpeg-2, but this needs to be confirmed.) And which exact ADS device is it? Is it hard wired with a chip which converts the video signal to mpeg-2 on the fly? Also, are you capturing using VS7 or the software which came with the ADS device? Sometimes it is better to capture with the software which came with it, and then open it in VS to edit...

I believe it is mpg2. I'm using a program called "capwiz" which came with the unit. It is an ADS Instant DVD running through a usb 2.0 port. If I recall, I had problems using the capture in VS7 and found the ADS software to work fairly well. Keep in mind I've been away from all this and am a bit rusty. I found that dual layer discs can be a problem and I will probably have to upgrade .... or try the Nero software that came with it.

thanks Ken -

Can you right click on one of the files in Video Studio and copy down the properties here.

As far as dual layer is concerned, I think there was a patch (applicable to all versions) which allowed even VS7 to burn dual layer. Do you have the full versions of VS7, or is it an SE version? Some of the latter don't even allow for burning of DVDs at all, or will only allow VCDs to be burned... In any case, Nero could be the way to go, depending on the version of that. If it came bundled with hardware, it is unlikely to be a full version itself, and may also not be able to record dual layer...

I have VS 7 SE and have had no problem making DVD's. The Nero I have is a suite of Nero software titles, it's rather disjointed so I really can't say what version it is but I got the writer this past Christmas so it can't be too old.

Here are the specs on the main file:
size: 8,078,880 KB
duration: 2:17:44.27
(other time stuff)
Format: 24 bit (720x480)
Compression: NTSC DVD, Field B, Variable Bit Rate max 7999 kbps
comp. ration: 0%
frame rate: 29.970
total frames: 247699

format: MPEG Audio Layer 2 files
Attrib.: 48000 Hz, 16 Bit stereo

I'm beginning to think that this is computer related or maybe some setup that I've not done or messed up. I have been playing around with a few different software titles of late, maybe one of them is causing a conflict. I may opt to remove all the editing software and do a fresh install. I may try to use ULead capture software again but I don't think that has anything to do with it, capture works fine, editing is unbearably slow.

Thanks again,
Greg

Go to http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html and download the free program called Sherlock. This will tell you what codecs you have installed on your computer. Your file specs seem fine as far as I can see. The only other thing I can think of is a missing or wrong codec -- you will be looking for mpeg-2 codecs...
