Steve,
After you install the program and use it.
If the program works good for what you want
to use it for without serious problems then
do not install any of the updates to the program.
If it ain't broke don't break it.

Is Ulead fair about rebates?

mad,
Long time no see.
We've traded several messages on the old forum in years past.
I used to "hold forth" there for the newbies. I was (and still am) a VS7 user.
The present mess involves a store selling a full version of VS8 for 70 bucks with two 30 buck rebates. Thing is after I got it home and got started filling out the rebate paperwork I see the fine print on "proof of prior ownership" for the upgrade rebate. The only thing they'll accept is the actual copyright page from the printed manual. Of course, the SE, or "bundled version" I have doesn't include a printed manual. Also there's the note that "bundled versions do not qualify for this rebate". Of course this is not the policy if you get an upgrade version from Ulead directly.
Anyway, I'll get my 30 bucks out of them one way or another. You can count on that.

Hey steve, even if Ulead agreed to qualify you for upgrade rebate, they will never pay.
I think its better to just file complaints with Attorney General to try to get the rebate.
I sent in my rebate forms in Oct 2004. Still no news. When I call the rebate center phone, it says "This manufacturer has closed all promotion activity".
I called ulead and that lady (she claimed the rebate department people do not go by names, so her number was 53) told me, I need to call the same 800 no and they will send me rebate check. That was more than a month back.

I spoke to four different people at Ulead. The last one was some kind of boss and after 20-30 minutes of arguing she let out that the rebate girl's last day was the preceeding Friday (2/25/05). Before that the voice mail at the rebate desk started with "All rebate deadlines have been extended"
Now it's "This manufacturer has closed all promotion activity"?.
Can you say "going out of business"?
Two plus two equals we're all SOL.

Clarification
Ulead seems to use 3 different sources to process rebates.
1. Ulead internal rebate department (Torrance, CA address on rebate forms)
2. GFS - www.web-rebates.com/ulead website
3. www.rebatestatus website
My particular rebate went to www.rebatestatus.com. However seems like ulead stopped processing rebates with them and hence I hear this message.
However, neigther ulead rebate department lady nor anybody else is telling me how I will receive the rebate since ulead stopped paying www.rebatestatus.com to process rebates.
When I call www.rebatestatus.com I get message "This manufacturer has stopped all promotion activities".
When I called ulead the lady gave me www.rebatestatus.com phone number to call and enquire about rebate (knowing fully well what promotion I am talking about, and possibly also knowing that they had stopped processing rebates with them).
Anyway, I will do what I can to get the rebates. I take them seriously, Its a promise made to me at the time of purchase, unless they take the product back and refund my money, I want what I was promised.

CompUSA
At least you should be assured of getting your rebate if you buy through CompUSA.

My experience has been that a few of these suits gets won and everyone tightens up their rebate processes. Vendors start slacking off again with unpaid rebates and longs delays after a few years and the process repeats.
I just bought VideoStudio 8 through a CompUSA sale. I didn't see the Fry's ad that everyone else is talking about. I just hope I get my rebates now.
