The security updates included in SP2 are essential. The rest may be good, or may make legacy software choke.
Full SP2 install is not required for VS 10+, but you may need elements of SP2. VS10+ runs fine on my work laptop that does not have SP2 (corporate image - custom updates) but does have MOST of the elements of SP2.

Les -- sorry. but for anyone these days to be running XP without SP2 seems to be just perverse. Months (years?) ago, perhaps. But now, no. I know some things will run without it, but it you have decided to have XP, it just seems silly to decide willy nilly not to have SP2, especially if you already have SP1... WHYYYYY??????????????????? Along time ago, I thought I could avoid SP2, but I loaded it and no problems. Now I can;t think of a reason why anyone would avoid having it...
