how to place dvr recorded movie on hard drive

i recorded a home movie to a dvd-rw on my toshiba dvr and finalized it.
i would like to place this movie on my computer hard drive so
that i can trim and edit the content. i followed the tutorial found at
http://www.jonesgroup.net/media/dvdmfthree.htm and then tried to
record the edited content to my hard drive but the computer hangs
at 'preparing video title data' 2% and converting video title 2/3 33%.
i recently tried dmf4, uninstalled it, uninstalled dmf3, reinstalled dmf3 and
applied the following patches in this order:
dmf3_hauppauge_wintvpvr_usb
dmf3_patch_e
dmf3_patch_dl_e
dmf3_patch2_dl_e
ulead_burning3619281_pack
did i do something wrong in the reinstall to make the software hang ?
