overlay and repair problems
I am using downloaded trial VS10
I have been dropping shots into overlay trk1 and adding fade in and out. when I preview the clip i can see the fades. When I play it as part of the project the fades are not there it just cuts in and out. Which makes working impossible. I'm sure it was working yesterday.
So I decided to do a repair as per manual, went to control panel add remove chose repair. After a liitle way into the repair got this messge "Please insert disk 1 that contains the file setup.ini" This is difficult when I have no disks.
Any suggestions?
Michael

Hi
Project Playback is quite demanding on your pc and does not always give a true representation of the project, especially if you have a slow pc.
Playback in clip mode is easier on your pc as you are only playing the clip and not compiling the timelines.
If you Change the playback method File – Preferences to High Quality the program will render to a temp file, although this takes some time, it will then playback from that file making it easier on your pc.
Try it on a few small clip to reduce the render time.
If you find an improvement you will have to look at your pc’s capabilities.
Switch off all background programs
Defrag your hard drives, etc
Check out System Tweaks from the manual

Update your profile on this forum to include your pc spec’
Hope this Helps

Hi Michael
That’s strange…….
My first thought was that High Quality Playback is not supported using the Trial Version.
But I get the same results using the full version, if I change the project settings to Avi then it works, using Mpeg I get the same message.( high quality playback mode is disabled with current project settings)
Using HQP was just a means of checking if it was just the playback that was slow or the effects that were not working. I still think slow playback.
As a test change the project properties to Avi, Use a compressor Dv-Video encoder type 1
I have tried version 9 and that works ok, VS 10 seems to have a problem?????

Hi Michael
I have just read your first posting again. I had assumed you were using the top video track.
Can you confirm that you are using the main video track, the top one, or are you using the overlay track, the second one down.
The Effects transitions (F/X etc) are only applicable to the main video timeline, You cannot use them on the overlay track.
If you are using the overlay track, you can apply a fade in / out using the Fade icons below the Direction and Style boxes.

You can adjust the fade time by moving the Trim Handles underneath the Preview Window. Did you inadvertantly move them so that it eliminated your fade?

Hi Michael
When you select the clip in the overlay track you can see the blue line below the preview screen.
The first unmarked section is where the transition takes place, the blue segment being the full image.
Selecting the clip will result in the project position curser showing at the beginning of the blue line. This is after the first transition. ( the down indicator on the top of the timeline) I don’t know why it does that.
The Clip is shown in three segments, if your clip is small say 9 seconds then the fade in will be only three seconds. This may not be enough to identify the fade as it will soon become visible.
Drag the project position curser ( the down indicator on the top of the timeline) slowly across the timeline to view the effect manually. You can expand the timeline using the + and – signs to get a slower response.
You can alter the effect duration by dragging the trim bars at each end of the blue line.
If you have a long clip then the transition will be proportionally longer and easier to view.
So how long is your clips?

First of all let me say I'm not any serious type of drugs:)
Secondly thanks for all the suggestions. Let me say that I am absolutely aware of the pause duration.
This is what I have found.
I am editing 16:9 mpeg files which were shot on two mini dvd tapes.
Wait for it. Half the clips or thereabouts (tape 1 or tape 2 is irrelevent) when laid into the overlay track, will fade in and out. The other half won't. I have played around for hours dropping different shots in and out and that is the result. I can have one clip not work and the clip shot next to it work. If the clip works originally it will always work and it doesn't work originally then it never works.
The only thing I am sure of is that no shot under 12 seconds works but then some clips that run 30 secs don't work.
Where do I go from here apart from the asylum!

Hi Michael
I have tried many options to simulate your problem and each time my clips work fine.
It is possible to copy and paste the attributes from one clip to another.
If you set the first clip with transitions that work, use right click to copy the attributes, select ‘all’ clips and paste attributes, all clips should react as the first.
It’s a quick way to set identical transitions to multiple clips.
I can only say that the full version I am using is working fine.
A re-install of the Trial Version may cure the problem, but to be honest I am running out of ideas.
All the Best Trevor
