I have just bought a Sony DCR-TRV265E Digital 8 video camera believing I would be able to play my analog 8 tapes in it and capture the videos via firewire.
The camera playback facility on the tapes recorded on itself but will not play my old tapes. I have tried tapes recorded on two different analog cameras - a Sony CCD-TRV95E and a Cannon UC8000E
Am I wrong in thinking I could play an analog tape in a digital camera, or is there something wrong with the Digital 8 camera?
Thanks

Hi Alex,
I'm not 100% sure, but your camcorder should be able to playback Hi-8 tapes. I have the DCR-TRV 120, and it is a Digital, Hi-8 camcorder. I can playback either format. I can also use it as a Pass-through to capture my analoge VCR tapes to DV.
In the camera there should be a setting, Playback Mode. Make sure it is set to Auto.

The answer is no. I have the Sony 120 & 840, they play all the 8mm formats. Go to Sony Europe. Compare your Dig8, with another. It shows the Model DCR-TRV265E, and some others; donot play Hi-8, or 8MM videos; which I had alot of, when my kids were smaller.
In Europe, it looks as if only, the Sony 300 & 400 series playback, Hi8 or 8mm videos, not the 200 series. Here in the states, I think all the Sony Dig8 camcorders played, 8mm and Hi8 tapes except the model #140, which I almost bought, until I read the specs.
