my VS10 crashes now and then

Post by Sektionschef »

Hi
I just want to know whether it is "common" that VS10 crashes now and then.
From my experience, if I work for about 2-3 hours then it is possible that VS10 has crashed once during this time. I mainly work with mpeg2 files(but they aren't corrupt or not compliant), don't know whether this has something to do with it. I can not reproduce the crashes, they just happen sporadicly.
How stable does VS run on your system?
How long can you usually work in average until VS crashes(if ever)?
If most of you can not confirm such an instability then I would start to investigate my system. If such crashes are common then I can save the time and just live with it(and change autosaving interval to 1Minute).

VS10 has yet to crash on me. Are your video Drivers up to date? Are you editing, rendering or burning when the crash happens?

Many Thanks for your answer.
So far, VS10 was always crashing just during editing.
I remember it crashed once while I was draging a clip onto the timeline.
But again, there is no specific procedure that leads to the crash. It just happens now and then.
I am also doing much other stuff on my PC and I can not say that any other application shows any instability like VS10 therefore I am not sure whether this is just a bug in VS10. In other forums I have read that Pinnacle Software is also crashing(even more often) so could it be that some instability is common to video editing software???

An occasional crash would be expected with any software, but frequent crashes would not, at least not with Video Studio. The first thing I would do if I were you is to set up an editing profile on your computer. sjj1805 has posted the best way to set this up on your computer so that the minimum amount of background programs are runnung while you are using Video studio. Either search for it or PM him in this regard. Also, check that your Video Drivers are up to date. Using two year old Drivers with VS10 could give you problems.

Hi Sektionschef

Just to add and confirm, no crashes.

I use VS a lot, it can run forever and no crashes.

I think I must be tempting fate here.

The only time I have had problems is with a corrupt video file, that was identifiable.

If it crashes, start with a clean install of VS.

Look at F1 ‘help’ look for System tweaks, I doubt that these will cure the crashes, worth a try.

All the Best

Hi,
I had excactly the same problem. After lot of efforts (including reinstall of windows), it became clear that the reason for this problem was the Graphics Card. After installing a new Graphics Card the crashes has completely stoped.

The only time VS10+ crashes is when I go back & forth on my clips with the cursor. Usually happens after a few hrs of editing.

I believe this is due to going forwards & backwards many times. I do this to see how my video looks like while I keep adjusting the length of the audio/video.

This sounds similar to what I have observed. I also often use the cursor and go back and forth on the clips and my VS10 also crashes after some few hours(2-3).
I will first install the editing profile from here:
http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic.php?t=13950
and test whether the crashes disappear.
If this does not help then I will check the graphics card.
Many Thanks for your inputs on this!!!!
