Sorry I haven't done a thorough search of this forum before asking this quick question. Can't believe how much info is here and it will take me some time to cover it, but;
With my Video Studio 8 software, and my DVICO Fusion HDTV Plus card, can I capture from my Analogue VHS to PAL at 720x576 as AVI file?
I am trying to convert my VHS and VHSC collection to DVD.
Using VS8, I am currently successfully converting to PAL 384x288 AVI files. The quality on the TV screen is just acceptable.
I can see available sizes up to 640x480 (none of which after converting to DVD give as good a result as 384x288).
Can my DVICO card capture PAL 720x576 as AVI?
(I know it does MPEG2 at this size - but my 1.8ghz processor can't cope).
Or (short of buying a 3rd capture card), should I just be happy with the 384x288?
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve, and welcome to the forums..
Everything that I can find on a DIVICO Fusion HDTV5-RT Gold Plus (if that is your card,This one then it can capture to Digital, DVD, SVCD, VCD, MPEG-1, and MPEG-2. Now I'm not sure what the DIGITAL format is, however I would suspect it to be Digital Video which is DV-AVI.
The size of 640 x 480 is a SVCD, or VCD format size. In VS8 (se) when you go to Capture, does it allow you to change the format? In the Capture Tab, on the left there is a pull-down menu beside Format. You should have the options of DV, AVI, MPEG, VCD, SVCD, DVD, and possibly WMV. Will it allow you to select DV? That is the format you need, in order to capture to DV-AVI. With DV-AVI, you then need to click on the Gear like icon, select DV type, and select Type-1. This should give you the 720 x 576 PAL format.
I might just add, VS8 was a real buggy version. It needed several patches. However since this came bundled with your card, it is considered an SE or Special Edition, and most of the updates and patches will not install to it. Now on the other hand the drivers for capturing using your card were probably written specifically for this, and a current version (VS10 +) may not work as far as capturing goes. You can however use your VS8SE to capture, and then VS10+ to edit and produce DVDs.

I fear, the Digital option will allow to capture uncompressed DV, not DV-AVI. DV-AVI is slightly compressed but that is already done on the camcorder, not during capture. Uncompressed DV results in humangeous file sizes and may cause too many dropped frames because the PC cannot write to disk fast enough.
I have used DVICO cards with limited success in the past. They will allow to feed through but will not do any on board compression.
It should allow mpeg2 capture in full size DVD but all the compression is performed by the PC (no hardware compression).
A few years ago, I gave up on analog capture cards and now use my digital camcorders pass through function, which works exceptionally well and gives me very good picture/sound quality.

Thankyou very much for the feedback
Much appreciate you taking the time to provide me with advice.
I will keep reading the wealth of information on this forum and maybe I can make some further minor improvements.
At the moment I am capturing PAL AVI 384x288 which is JUST good enough for the home video stuff.
Someone at work in pity has lent me their (no longer required as they have moved to digital too) Pinnacle capture card so I might risk swapping to that from DVICO later on.
By the way, my DVICO card is a Fusion HDTV DVB-T Plus shown here;

Sorry I did not provide enough details the first time.

I have the NTSC version Gold 3. It will not let me capture .avi format only mpg or High Definition .tp format. The card has a MPEG hardware encorder so I doubt you can capture .AVI.
You should be able to capture VHS/VHS-C thru the S-Video port on the card at full PAL DVD resolution 768x576. Use the configuration tool to change your settings.
