Hi,
It's my first time at this so please be patient with me!
Just bought a praktica 5203 & am using Photo explorer 8, pc is running XP.
Now I appreciate that this may be a faulty usb cable, but in the meantime...
Could there be any other reason or can somebody talk me through the settings?
Many thanks in advance !

You don't need a USB driver, that's handled by WIN XP. What you need is communication software (driver) for your camera.
I have several cameras and don't want to have all this different software cluttering my system. I use a multi format card reader. Some of my equipment uses SD, others use CF cards. That, of course, came with a driver as well but all I have to do now is to bang the memory card from the camera into the respective card slot and, voila.
If XP doesn't recognize a device plugged into a USB port, chances are there is a problem with the connected devices. Have you installed any of the software that came with your camera?
What happens when you plug in the camera while XP is running, does it come up with "Found New Hardware.." message?
If not, chances are that 1 of 3 devices is faulty.

- 1. Camera out
2. USB cable
3. USB port on the PC
- If not, try another port.
If yes try another cable.

Don't know for other cameras but for my two Canon's, No. They come on automatically when I plug them in.
Plugging a powered up device into a USB port can have detrimental effects as I found out the hard way. I plugged my printer into a USB port on my laptop while both were powered up, fried the mobo on my laptop. It still worked but I had no USB ports left.
Since then I only plug in devices that are switched off.
