3 camera edit crashing MSP 8.1

Post by DVX »

I am working on a three camera edit, each camera AVI is placed on a separate video track. Although MSP is not designed for multiple camera edits, with all three timelines viewable at the same time, editing is possible. Problem is after 3-5 mins MSP makes a long access on the HD and then crashes. It does this consistently and I have tried it on two different PC's with the same effect. Two camera edits on two timelines is OK. Does any one have any ideas?

Try disabling the auto-back-up in Preferences. If you try to do something while it is operating, you may have problems.

There is no reason why a 3-cam project should not work. Charlie Hills' book gives a good section on how to do it and even how to preview more than 1 track simultaneously. I've worked on projects with 7 or more video tracks with no difficulty, so 3-track work should be easy-peasy, lemon squeezy.

The auto save feature is now turned off, but still crashing. I should have mentioned the crashing happens with the 'Play to markout' button is pressed, as I use this to check the edits. If the timeline scrub is used then no crashes but then no preview. Downloading the getting results book, only 2 more hours to go.

Can't really say, because we know nothing about your system but it appears to me that your system is running out of puff. Possible reasons
  • too little physical memory
not enough free space on the HDD holding the temp files
not enough free disk space (ratio of free disk space to space taken by source video is >2:1 plus space for temp and swap file
    disk fragmentation
other things in the background competing for resources

Agree that this is a possibility, but it could also be a corrupt file. As you say, the OP has not read and acted on the "Before you post" Sticky thread and he should do before we can take this further.

The two different PC's specs are below, you’re right I should have included these.

PC 1 main edit PC.

Windows XP
2 gig ram
AMD 64 3G
Drive with media 300g, 100 spare
Drive with Windows 300g, 200 spare
Bare bones install

PC 2

Windows XP
Dell Latitude D610 portable
512 M
2G Pentium
80 drive with 40 gig spare

Both PC's do the same when the preview button is pressed, sometimes OK, but after 5 mins will crash.

Project is 3 x AVI files, 60 mins long each. Each on own video level.

I have completed the 1st edit now by scrubbing on the timeline and not previewing. 2nd edit is to start soon so any ideas are welcome.

Which kind of preview are you using, Instant, Quick or High Quality? Does it do the same for all types?

What are the characteristics of the AVI? Just saying AVI is meaningless, as there are tens of different codecs that can be wrapped into an AVI file. Are all three files the same type? Have you tried combinations of two files (1-2, 1-3 and 2-3) to see whether the same thing happens or even single files? As you are working in 8.1, have you tried using sub-timelines to see whether the same happens?

If we were talking DV-AVI, I could see why the portable would be choking. 3 x 1 hour DV-AVI = 3 x 13 GB = >39 GB required to work with these files.

Do you have any partitions on your desk top PC? If yes, how big is the partition where the temp files reside?

Have you checked your HDD's and Memory for errors?

My portable has 60G on a separate partition with the temp file also on this drive.

The instant preview has been worked around by not using this feature, however, the program has now crashed on both PC's 4 times while saving the DVP file. This results in the DVP file being deleted on the HD. I can get back the last known version but this looses work and time. Must admit that MSP is not as stable as other editing programs I have used and fixes are slow in coming. Maybe it's OK for non serious use but for my current edit it has cost significant time. ....

I will check my HD's and memory.

Hi,
your problem is about your captured video. you have to capture your videos again. that's all. it is about encoding/decoding error.
always cinema...
